I'm actually in the process of putting together a new bike... with a variety of day-glo colors thrown in

But that's just me, really. I'm a fool for color, especially bright, neon colors (just take a look at my sig ). Takes me back to simpler times, I suppose.

Which, by the way, is why I'm still undecided whether to make it fixed or just SS. The simplicity of a fixie, plus the nostalgic aspect of it (I used to ride fixie BMX's as a kid) is very alluring.

BUT, I can imagine that pedaling non-stop can get pretty draining. Plus, just out of habit now, I'm almost sure I'll forget I'm riding a fixie and try to coast and eat dirt.

I think I may be leaning towards SS, and I'll just get it with a flipflop hub, so if I get REALLY curious about riding fixed after a while, it'll be easy to set up.


What do the experts think? What is the benefit of a fixie over SS?

single speed, FAT tires, get ready for the snow and slush. bright colors can be good just to ID the bike, if you get a chance. around here lots of people beat their frames with a chain to make them less attractive.

yeah, I definitely want to get in a few rides while the air's still not prohibitively cold and the roads prohibitively icy. I haven't been riding as much, but that's because I'd lost some of my motivation, when I realized that my current bike is just way too large for me, and it feels pretty unnatural. I'm still pumped about cycling, which is why I decided to bite the bullet and get a good bike that was actually made to fit me. Pretty sure once I have the new bike, it'll spark my motivation back up.

As far as theft goes, I'm not SUPER concerned. We have our own yard here, so it's safe to bring in our bikes (we still lock them up)... plus there's also space in the apartment itself. No problem carrying the bike two stories and setting it somewhere inside. I probably won't be able to ride it anywhere without a full set of locks and chains, though. It'll definitely be thief bait.

And be careful with those cars, TD.

I usually get pretty paranoid when I ride here, so I'm always making extra sure that I'm riding safely. It may annoy some of the more reckless cyclists in the area, who just love to ride like the wind and pretend that cars don't exist (it's a serious issue). But hey, can you hate me for wanting to stay alive?

Headed to Bend, OR this weekend for a 4 day mtn bike trip. Raining cats and dogs lately so I have a feeling it's going to be a mud fest, but it should still be fun.

jealous! mud is fun, the only trick is to keep moving so the mud flings off and doesn't build up jamming your seat stays. you go out on a 22lb bike, return with a 50 lb bike looking like a skunk with a shit eating grin. we used to leave loooooong stripes of mud on the streets all through the neighborhood returning home, pissed people off, made us easy to find.

Aqua - lesson learned is that I have no need to do 35mph on the morning commute, dumb, dumb, dumb. 20-25mph, is good. too slow and you can't take the lane and be assertive, too fast and you can't react. I just let go of the brakes, took the lane and dropped down a short hill. right when I hit the intersection at the bottom some dumb bitch did a three point turn right in front of me. my skidmark went across the intersection, around her car and 10 feet further. scared the shit out of me, she had no clue, no idea what happened. disc brakes FOREVA!!
