On CNN a bit earlier tonight there was a ticker that said the Obama's had just seen Avatar, lol.

I hear Avatar 2 is going to be ten minutes long and reuses the Cameron line "Nuke the site from orbit".

I saw the 3D version yesterday and have now read the whole of this tread. Visually stunning, plot designed not to stretch the 12 year old brain the film is aimed at. The music however was extremely unimaginative. One of the themes from Aliens was rehashed, which was the highpoint, but bland bland strings all over it.

In the closing credits I noticed they hired a musicologist. So what the hell did they pay him/her for? To watch Disney and Hollywood films for inspiration? Terrible panflute cheesiness.

I saw this yesterday with my nephew. I was really surprised how effecting it is emotionally. I know the story of the Native Americans and other examples of one culture imposing theirs on another culture, and the environmental issues, but I still found it moving. I think this was partly because even though the story is simple and predictable, it's a moving story nonetheless. Mainly though I think it has to do with the use of technology to make it hyper real and therefore hyper emotional. I was really surprised how effecting it was, and the immersive 3D world they created it something genuinely new, although I don't know if anyone will have the money and time to create something that detailed and fully realized again. It was a unique moviegoing experience, that's for sure.

Edit: I agree the music wasn't notable at all. Nor the sound design really. The Dark Knight, now that was some sound design.

i know that one, there are people calling themselves sounddesigner and 'tuning' sound systems (PAs) for events or theatres... making the whole thing worse, i mean i never had the experience that they managed to improve it, absolute the total opposite... well they still get jobs highly paid, clever and welcome to reality.

not that i agree, but it happens all around us.

look at music in general having a record or even a successful record out or even a single track, has absolute NOTHING to do with the musical quality or your talent. it's about business skills, nothing else.

It was the best movie experience I have ever had. Loved it. Yes the movie has its faults, but overall I was not disappointed.

Avatar gets worse the more I think about it. Amazing visuals is pretty much the only thing it had going for it. It's like Space Ace all over again.

Also, it's Pocohontas all over again.

For all its faults I reckon I'll go see it again Sunday. Bring on John Carter Of Mars, A Pixar Live action movie with perfect women, sword fights, giant flying ships, cruel rulers, weird monsters and a hostile environment.
