are you sure? Here in Europe we can see the contradiction very well... for instance: "black" (afro-american) people are not so "free" as pretending they are, only white and rich anglosaxon people have the power, and it is just a minority, because the majority of people in USA is poor, it is not like in sweden or germany, where almost everyone is rich: in USA many people are poor, expecially not "WASP" (afroamerican, hispanish etc.). Another thing we (european) don't understand about the so-called "land of freedom" is: how can a country be called "civil" when death penalty is still legal (as in middle age) and weapons and guns sold as we here sell bread and given to children, too?! Last but not least, how can you call "free" a nation in which if you need a cure you have to PAY for hospital and doctors?!! In Europe this is kind of a nonsense. Those are the main differences.knotkranky wrote:Naw, you have it wrong. This U.S. "is" the land of the free as long as you're a U.S. citizen. There's no pretending in that.myrnova wrote:of course it is true, with one little difference: other countries don't pretend to be "the land of freedom" and such bullshit when they try to justify crimes, genocide and wars...knotkranky wrote:^ This is true of all peoples and their government/corporations.
Best not to brow-beat the ignorant for being ignorant, without context.
But you're preaching to the choir in this forum. I'm in agreement with part of your protest, but most americans are not going to hear you concerning the current sitch. Unless your point is that the U.S. deserves it![]()
Too soon, wrong thread, not enough context for a decent fight.

^ Ah ok, that's why your atrocities list begins "after" WW2
In the U.S. we are free to be rich, free to be free-loaders and we have a black president. So oppression? not so much as you say. Always working on better.
If you wanna compare countries, I can start a list of accomplishments that you enjoy on a minute by minute basis.
You're better off protesting corporations, then you wouldn't have to break forces with good americans trying to agree with you. There's a better way other than brow-beating your sympathetic american pals.
Btw, your government and corporate leaders are in complete collusion with the same in the U.S.
You've got lots to atone for at home.

Re: Boston
Alas, before WW2 you have two enormous atrocities: (1) genocide of american natives (about 60 millions people killed) and (2) black people slavery and discrimination (till nowadays, as far as I know). Regarding Obama, you still call "a miracle" (?!!) something ABSOLUTELY NORMAL in 2013? What's the miracle? That he is not white?! And people in USA call him "a socialist". We laugh at it, of course, because he is everything but a socialist, LOL. Another thing we laugh at is your "flag religion": we can see the USA government "educating" citizen to respect the holy flag, since from children in kindergarden etc. That makes us laugh, people crying under the flag, or singing hymns "america, god bless america"... those things are funny for european citizen, it is like old mussolini movies, simply ridiculous. In USA you can't joke about these aspects, it is like being a terrorist. Here we can, expecially in Italy: being a "patriot" is like to be a nostalgic fascist, things like that.knotkranky wrote:^ Ah ok, that's why your atrocities list begins "after" WW2

Italian dude here is speaking the truth. For the most part. People are crazy here when it comes to politics and overwhelmingly ignorant about it. More criticism is helpful. But a lot of people just don't want to hear itknotkranky wrote:

Plus in typical fashion a huge percentage of the Native Americans were whipped out not by war or evil settlers, but by the simple fact that Europeans brought diseases with them that destroyed them. The vast majority were whipped out by friendly settlers accidentally.
European actions in Africa directly mirror the brutality invoked on Native Americans, in many ways. To this day conflicts there make South America look tame..
Re: Boston
I've never said "europeans are better, we win", it's not a football game. We (italians) invented fascism, europeans created Hitler and shit like that, so nothing to be proud, just shame. I've just noticed some contraddictions about some american fellows "pride to be", "god bless" and all those ridiculous things. I mean, we all know China is the new Empire, but nobody would have the nerve to call it "the land of freedom", apart the chinese government... Understand?Machinesworking wrote:You're forgetting the colonization of Africa and India on Europes part.myrnova wrote:Alas, before WW2 you have two enormous atrocities: (1) genocide of american natives (about 60 millions people killed) and (2) black people slavery and discrimination (till nowadays, as far as I know).
