I've not made a call on the iPhone, so can't comment on its virtues as a phone. But yeah, the iPhone certainly does a lot of other stuff, if that's what you're after. And if money's no object, then I say go for it! BTW, Jobs will have a new one to sell you in a year or so, so don't put your wallet away too quickly.
As for the "convenience" of having all that functionality in one device, that's just not lighting my fire. I'm way too connected already as it is! I need fewer pathways for knuckleheads to reach me, not more!
Yes, I may wait for the second gen. My typical rule is to not do the first and then skip every other but I'm damn tempted. Depends on the real reviews come July. I only want one gadget to cover it all.
I've spent a lot of time in japan. Their cell system in tight and has amazing bandwidth. The euro's too. It will really be something to have full G3 and the iPhone here in the states.

Yeah, it would probably be cool to have all that in one device, but I'm just too cheap to pay the premium necessary for that kind of convenience. And truly, I don't like being 100% connected 100% of the time. I waste VAST quantities of time on the web as it is--I can only imagine how my productivity would deteriorate if I could carry it around in my pocket with me.

Yes, I haven't had a tv in my place for over 2 years for the same reason. A mac in my pocket will be a convenience though.
