cool, wish theyd open the beta up a bit more
Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta 'soon'...
Had upgrade in the cart , then asked myself "paying now for software that might or not be released in several months ?" Updated to ver.8 on the day one, now repeating the mistake but on day "-120 or -180" ? Compared to other products Ableton upgrades prices are more like 2002, not 2012. Full Logic costs less, latest Reason was free and previous "1$- what you like". Yet it is not really about the price, it is not that much money, but Ableton being out of touch with the reality, the market. The hectic release with inconsiderate image, design, website changes do not increase my confidence (or rather lack of it) in this company. Still hope the developers work better than marketing & co. Wait and see policy is more appealing to me, Live 9 beta works better than 8 when officially released, now waiting what Bitwig might bring.garyboozy wrote: still bought the upgrade though

There's usually a freebie plugin or two out there that will render it useless.Hermanus wrote:VST support and plugin crash protection

And this now explains the mystery why no AU support in 1.0, they were busy implementing this external VST plug-in process which is in my books more important than AU support, indeed.
Anyway, imagine doing an important DJ gig with an app where third party plug-ins crash the whole application...

This is why this feature is great because there are so many shitty plugs out there that crash your DAW.kitekrazy wrote:There's usually a freebie plugin or two out there that will render it useless.Hermanus wrote:VST support and plugin crash protection

This adresses it

Exactly, this obviously shows that they're on the ball and working diligently towards a solid positive release.kent_sandvik wrote:By not crashing?kitekrazy wrote:There's usually a freebie plugin or two out there that will render it useless.Hermanus wrote:VST support and plugin crash protection

. A crash is a crash. Most likely the implementation is based on an external process that communicates to Bitwig via IPC sending the audio stream back and forth. If the process dies, all that happens is that the incoming data stream no longer receives bits. Very similar to Logic's 32-bit plug-in process.

I'm actually very happy to see this update, I was pretty dismissive before, but looking at how they're very focused on the "details" bodes very well IMO.

I think there are daws that do this. IIRC FL is one of them.kent_sandvik wrote:Very nice! It's indeed time most DAWs should have plug-in crash protection.Hermanus wrote:VST support and plugin crash protection

You'd think the upgrade prices would be more reasonable given this factOzWozEre wrote:Of course they're still alive -- why do you think Ableton has scrambled to soft-launch Live 9 months in advance with upgrade pricing offers to lockin as much of their user base as they can?pencilrocket wrote:Oh they still alive!
2013 is going to be an interesting year me thinks.
Time to stock up on the popcorn.

bitwig are trying to attract a new userbase, Live already has its captive audience

I doubt that's the case. Customer as customer. It should not even be hard to lure over some of the Live users in case Bitwig is a fun/productive platform.simmerdown wrote:bitwig are trying to attract a new userbase, Live already has its captive audience

Re: finally... BITWIG STUDIO! beta 'soon'...
exactly, not hard at all
Live has the challenge of trying to keep its base, and add the new, that might be tough if bw comes thru with a quality product (someday)

I'm sure most of us own more than one DAW.
They aren't mutually exclusive.
