the argentinians looking increasingly strong toward the end of the first half.
ALF-TIME: Argentina and Holland remain goal-less at the interval in Frankfurt. The Argentines look the better of the two line-ups with some electric running and passing by some of their more creative players. But that whittled out a little in the dying minutes of the half and Holland did just enough to hold on.
45 mins+1: The orange shirts seemingly part as Messi darts down the middle of the pitch. He has a crack at goal but Edwin van der Sar is up to the challenge and performs a little hop and skip as he catches it.
45 mins: There's just one minute of time added on in this half.
44 mins: You can empathise with Argentina and Barcelona fans when they wax lyrical about Lionel Messi. He produces half-a-dozen moves from his box of tricks in quick succession. While awesome viewing and totally hypnotic for Holland's defenders, they come to nought.
42 mins: Holland perform a bit of yo-yo heading, in part possibly to avoid Argentina's slick passing along the turf. Amid all of it, Andre Ooijer is yellow carded for scissoring Riquelme's limbs in the tackle.
"Dirk Kuyt doesn't appear to be in the referee's good books - he's been yellow carded and quite a few decisions appear to have gone against him already." (see 38 mins)
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
39 mins: The tempo and thrill of this game has briefly evaporated but you get the impression that'll only be shortlived.
38 mins: Dirk Kuyt and referee Luis Medina Cantalejo don't seem the best of pals in Frankfurt tonight. They've already had a few words and will probably have some more after Kuyt is deemed to have handballed when controlling a cross. For what it's worth, the referee was wrong on this occasion.
35 mins: Wesley Sneijder gets hold of the ball from 30 yards but it hits Roberto Ayala and massively ricochets out for a corner. It briefly curtails the mounting Argentine pressure.
33 mins: The pace with which Argentina turn the game is incredible. This time, Lionel Messi pokes the ball through for Maxi Rodriguez but all Rodriguez can do is clatter the side netting.
"There is a relentless drum beat from the Argentine section of fans and the South American contingent just will not stop singing as they create a delightful atmosphere. But the Holland supporters are in subdued form."
Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport in Frankfurt
30 mins: The shot of the night - to date - belongs to Maxi Rodriguez. He catches the ball on the up and very nearly half-volleys it into the goal. It shaves the post and all he can do is put his head in his hands in exasperation.
29 mins: Riquelme swipes a free-kick into the box, which Khalid Boulahrouz smacks off his own post to just fend off the interest of Carlos Tevez.
28 mins: Dirk Kuyt is the first booking for the night as he blocks off Carlos Tevez.
27 mins: Riquelme turns in a stunning corner from the left side. Edwin van der Sar just punches it over but doesn't look all that relaxed about it in the process.
"When Holland attack, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Riquelme don't ever go back to defend for Argentina - and it is making for a very open game."
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
25 mins: Leandro Cufre rolls over four times on the turf before waving to his bench after Robin van Persie challenges strongly. It's slightly excessive from Cufre but he wins a free-kick nonetheless.
24 mins: Nicolas Burdisso comes off and is replaced by Fabricio Coloccini - a very early change.
23 mins: Ayala couldn't be angrier if he tried. There's loads of shoulder shrugging and referee-bating after he concedes a free-kick for fouling Ruud van Nistelrooy. You can understand his frustration - what he did looked fairly innocuous.
21 mins: Roberto Ayala slides in for a superb challenge to give Phillip Cocu something to think about in his 100th Dutch appearance.
18 mins: Dirk Kuyt finds the target with a belting strike. It is saved and he wins a corner. There's some cracking end-to-end stuff going on out there.
16 mins: Argentina look electric on the break, suddenly adding the sort of pace they showed against Serbia and Montenegro from nowhere. Maxi Rodriguez, a double goal scorer in that match, is the major threat on this occasion as he paves the way for a Carlos Tevez strike which is just wide.
"That is a definite penalty - Ooijer was clearly pulled over inside the box - and the referee gave it the other way!" (see 13 mins)
Graham Taylor, Five Live Sport summariser
13 mins: Nicolas Burdisso is doing his utmost to put in an early shout for an Oscar after a dramatic tumble to the turf after grappling with Ruud van Nistelrooy. Meanwhile, television replays show Holland should have won a penalty after Gabriel Milito dragged down Andre Ooijer in the box.
11 mins: Robin van Persie does so much hopping over the ball on his break down the right flank he nearly flumoxes himself and has a comedy stumble. In the end, he just about gets a cross in and it brings Holland's first corner of the match.
8 mins: There's a gargantuan cheer every time Lionel Messi gets the ball. The Argentine fans love him and you can understand why. He very nearly sends Esteban Cambiasso through to score but Khalid Boulahrouz slides in perfectly to dispossess Cambiasso.
6 mins: Riquelme whips in a corner but Robin van Persie dives in to head it out for another corner. A second corner from Riquelme lands straight into Edwin van der Sar's grasp.
4 mins: Robin van Persie brings some sharp intakes of breath from the crowd with a tasty cross. Roberto Abbondanzieri cooly leaps from between his posts to take it unchallenged.
PLAYER RATER: Holland and Argentina may have rested some influential players, but Player Rater aficianados are still expecting a wonderful encounter. Of those who responded to a poll on Player Rater, an overwhelming 79% insist this game WILL be the classic everyone is hoping for.
2 mins: Holland dominate proceedings in the opening two minutes. It remains to be seen whether that will set the theme for the match.
2000 BST: Holland get proceedings going in the latest match-up between two of the great sides in World Cup history.

That's cool... I hope the USA can get into this second round. I don't care if we have to play Brazil. I mean, stranger things have happened in terms of upsets. I know it's a cliche but the USA over Russia in hockey in 1984 is the classic upset.Digi V wrote:10am, big day for U.S's group
whoever comes in second will have to face brazil in the next round.
I know, pipedreams, dude...

Figures, he was the only player who showed any worth at all on this team. Fucking Landon Donavon? That guy sucked big time. I hope he never plays for a World Cup team again. Keller sucked. Beasley sucked. Arenas will never coach a World Cup team again.
I'm disapopinted but should have known better. Nobody outside of huge USA supporters (are there really any here??) have ever heard of these guys to begin with. Total USA full blown hype machine...
i'm kinda of sacary to face gana on the next fase... those guys already won the world cup, ans have nothing to loose at all...
But i'm glad we didn't get Italy so soon... maybe it would be a nice final...
best,

brazil was dominating pretty much all during the first half but then japan had a break and scored a goal.
right before the half ended ronaldinho made a beautiful play to the breaking winger who then headed it to ronaldo who topped it off with a nice header into the goal!!
1-1 at the half. brazil should come out blazing.....
croatia is 1-1 with the socceroos
