You may not like the choices that people in Venezuela are making, but when the US backed coup attempt happened in 2002, there were quickly a million Venezuelans who surrounded the Presidential Palace. 1/4 to 1/2 half of them with guns and they demanded the person they elected be returned. This is in a nation of 25 million people. That is a significant percentage of the population that lived within the range to just go there.

Unfortunately I do not see this sort of engaged citizenship active in the people of the US. We are sleepwalking into oppression. At some point enough people will wake up. At that point it may be too late to use legal social channels to rebalance things as those channels are swiftly being removed and rights recinded.

I actually agree with you but the thing we should remember here is unlike Venezuela or any other country on PLANET EARTH America was and still is a big experiment - the only original people from this country are Native American's (indians if you will) - everyone else came here by boat or plane - and they all came here for different reasons

Whether it be to drive a taxi, open a corner store, act, escape a bad regime, famine etc no matter what the reason everyone here is here for all kinds of reasons.

Exactly right, and I'm saying you have to do something. One "has" to participate.

Our choices in parties and candidates are difficult. Choosing the lesser of two evils is always in play and a fact of life. I wasn't inspired by Clinton in the first election because how can you know, but after his first four years I was excited to be a part of four more. What a great president he was. I didn't like kerry at all, but I knew enough about george to vote against george. There are such huge variations within the parties that you come down to the candidates vibe and their agendas. Certainly, moderate republicans, moderate democrats and moderate libertarians can look very similar compared to the edges of their parties. Bush is vilified in his own party by republicans who hate his agenda and the same was true for Clinton for not being liberal enough!. It's hard to believe in a candidate who is a fresh face on the scene. What can you do.

Consider your own non vote as a vote for "the more of two evils"

Ok, so you don't like either party and picking the lesser of two evils is out of the question. What now?. Do nothing? How can anyone be for non action? Not vote to show who a lesson? Non participation is a message? You would have to write 100 letters to your congressman a year to begin to come close to the value of a vote on election day. One day!! What, is the positive value in spreading a non voting message?

Actually.... the point I was making was, don't be surprised if we Repubs actually keep control. While I concede it is possible we lose the House, I don't think the results will be as overwhelming as you see on this board... and may still fall in our favor. And I might feel compelled to laugh.

Sure, anything could happen. Though me and my voting friends plan to tip the scales and edge out a few more seats than expected.

All we need is a great turn-out of voters. If we get a good numbers, bush gets less power, his own troubles, and we all get a little more sanity back.

If the Republicans keep the majority, I fully expect a razzing from plenty of gloaters... ew, thats the last I'll think of that.
