i found out yesterday that giga sampler libraries are accepted by live plus you can delet the gig files since the single wavs within em will be in your ableton folder. same goes for sf2/sfz files but they are flaw. i use an sfz/2 sampler instead. live is no good for sfz/2

Haha the really freaky thing about this is that by trying this (don't ask, it's early), I discovered that in OSX alt/f4 opens sys. prefs to the sound control panel...damn, I've been wanting a key command to open that for ages and you found it for me!! Thanks! btw, alt+any of the brightness controls opens displays and alt+keyboard backlight opens keyboard/mouse prefs....YES!

performing 'slip edits'

I do a lot of edits in the arrangement window, I mean lots of very small edits where I pluck miniature segments of sound out of a large clip to create a rhythm or beat. Often I need to shift the little wave in a clip along by a fraction to pick out a different sound - but simply using the start markers can leave a user frustrated as they 'bump' against the surrounding clips.

select the clip waveform,
ctrl+4 to de-activate the snap grid.
select the start marker and hold shift to 'slip-edit'

I bet lots of people are thinking 'why the hell would you need that', but for me and the way I work it's excellent.

For months I have always taken care to assign this functions to number keys, but tonight I have been drinking so I was trying to assign tracks to number keys but I was in fact accidentally hitting F1 instead of 1... and it was already assigned! Sweetness!!! Had to mention it, this is a fantastic thread.

BTW: widescreen monitors = <3 <3 <3, I love my new one.
i hate that. i dont mind it per say, but the fact that i cant reassign those keys to something else, because they are still assigned to channel on/offs is really buggin me. almost as much as its bugging the shit out of me that after the F8 key, them assignments are gone.

atleast let me turn that fucking feature off if i dont want it, kinda like that spavebar beeing the stop button. no autohotkeys included.

apologies if this has already been posted in this monstrously cool thread, but you can change 'arm' & 'solo' behaviour in the preferences so that the default action when clicking multiple solos is to 'solo together' instead of switching :) alt then allows you to do the opposite, solo exclusive.

Anyhoo, this is like the greatest thread of all thread history, thx to you all for your tips.

Btw, do you know if there is a way of turning volume up or down of all the tracks at the same time?

thx
Andy

While trying the above out, I stumbled on Ctnl + Alt (in Draw mode), which gave me a "grabber hand" with which to move up and down quickly through the MIDI clip piano roll. This will save me from having to use zoom to see all the notes, which makes note-intense clips show each note as very tiny specks. Yay!!

when you duplicate a clip in the arrangement view it is automatically placed immediately after the original clip.

my stupid trick:

the up/down and left/right arrows make for easier browsing in the file/folders panel, esp. when trying presets.

if you are on a folder, right will open the folder, left will close the folder.
left on a closed folder moves up in the heirarchy.

if you are on a file, right will load, left will move up in the heirarchy (to the containing folder).

a sequence of left-presses will simultaneously move-up and close folders which makes the browsing a bit more tidy if you have many folders.

Damn, that's a good one.

So with a Midi to key stroke translator, you could select tracks for DJing completely with a control surface. No mouse DJing, isn't that what everyone keeps asking for?

I assume the file loads into the currently selected clip slot? At work, so can't try it. I've always drag and dropped, but then i don't really DJ.

Doesn't work here either. 10.4.11 PPC (powerbook). And it doesn't appear here:

system prefs -> keyboard & mouse -> keyboard shortcuts

Shouldn't it be in there if it existed? Anyways, you can always make a custom keyboard shortcut in that same menu.

Thx for the reply Iced, however I still can figure out how to configure that command in the keyboard short cut menu...can you help me?
