Gentleman, my computer is in the process of restoring the settings to my iPad 2 from the backup of my iPad 1 I just did. Luckily I have a meeting that is going to be about an hour and a half because I think it's going to take at least that long. The computer claims about 5 minutes, but I don't think so, Chuck. I think it hasn't yet calculated the 8,000 apps I have installed. :P

I saw live as a musical note book that would sit on my lap top as a starting point and that i could transfer ideas out of and into logic on my desk top to fill out and finish.
I worked like this for about three weeks then realized i was working start to finish in live.
In my mind live is a great musicians tool, logic is a great producers tool.

While i'm here i have a couple of questions about iPad apps.
I'm getting me an iPad2 in a couple of weeks and i'm looking at,

TouchOSC.
Touchable.
Griid.

So, to save me dragging my way through all the threads, what is every ones opinion on these app's?
I would like to have as much control from one app as possible and be able to launch clips, record into an empty clip slot, control devices and launch scenes..

touchAble is my pick for an all-encompassing Live controller. Griid is cool for the sequencer, but just isn't as comprehensive. TouchOSC - or the equally as impressive Midi Touch - are great for other functions you may need like tons of XY pads or detailed controller layouts to manipulate specific rack or synth parameters. Having said that, touchAble also gives you access to anything you might add via macros...and it gives you keys and drum pads. Oh, and soon you'll get absolutely amazing XYZ pads as well...!

I'd really get the following apps:

touchAble
Griid
Midi Touch
Konkrete Performer
KapturePad

It's not that much of an investment, yet gives you an astonishing level of performance control.
Thank you Mr LSZ.

Yup and LOL it's still installing the apps some 2 hours later. :P It's on the T's so it should be done soon. I'm curious to see if it fucked up my folder structure. :x

A few first impressions on the iPad 2.

It was shipped in a nondescript box similar to how you would expect from a quality porn shop. Nothing on it including the shipped from address says Apple. I'm sure if it did say Apple anywhere on it, it would be more likely to "fall off the truck". Much respect to Apple for making that decision.

At first I didn't like the changed more extended angled bevel on the back but it has already grown on me and I'm sure it helped in the weight reduction. To my surprise when I hold the iPad 1 and 2 there is a noticeable weight difference.

But as has been mentioned it's an odd fit for the sync cable. You really have to pay attention when plugging it in or there is a good chance that you'll miss the connection and possibly scratch the iPad. This really isn't an issue with the iPad 1.

I didn't get a case or cover for it yet and people were saying it fits in the Apple made iPad 1 case. However when I put the iPad 2 in that case it felt a bit like slipping a supermodel into a fat suit, a lot of slippage in there and it glaringly shows the size decrease. Oh, also the thickness reduction is quite noticeable even when not in the iPad 1 case. Also when in the case the placement change of the controls is really noticeable. Other than not quite lining up properly with the holes they are also more inset. I really have to dig for the volume adjustment and the off switch on top.

Another initial concern was there's an angle on the bevel where you plug in speakers or headphones that looks like it would be perfect for Apple's ear buds but not so much for third party connections (typical, meh) but I plugged in my Sony headphones and although there is slight exposure of the plug on the angled side there wasn't an issue (Thank you Jesus!)

Although I didn't go through all my 8,000 apps it looks like the transfer went well and all my folder structure stayed intact. Other than having to re-put in some passwords and the security code for my credit card for the 3G connection there weren't really any other hiccups.

It took about 3 minutes to wipe my iPad 1 clean and restore the factory settings and it's back in it's pristine factory box ready for delivery to my mom this weekend. It'll be a happy surprise (until she sees she's not getting any of my 8,000 apps :x ) :)

Not a big Civil War fan myself but The History Channel released a pretty innovative Civil War app. It doesn't just give you the usual stories. It updates each day with news on the day anniversary of when each event happened. So it's like being updated in real time except 150 years later and it looks like it's going to do that for the next 4 years, the timeline of the war. 8O Cool concept and great way to get detailed history.

@beats, I got the Griffin leather case for my iPad 2. Very sleek.

Cool. Does it cover the front and back, give you access to the buttons, cameras and cable port without issue, and not add too much to the weight or size? May sound like a lot to ask for but not really.

I get Apple's concept of not wanting to cover up the sleek design of the shell with a case, but at the same time I'd rather cover it than have it get all scratched to shit. My iPad 1 looks like it just rolled off the assembly line even after a year of daily use.

Touchable is simple to setup and use, with controls for all that you listed, and offers a pleasant aesthetic design. TouchOSC (with the LiveControl template) is more flexible, and can also be used with Logic. Griid is really in its own category at this time, and not what I would use for my main controller; at least until/if they make a hybrid of it and LiveControl.

If you want a simple substitute for an APC40, and use only Live, then Touchable. If you want more flexibility, enjoy designing your own layouts, need to use it with something other than Live, and appreciate vector graphics, then TouchOSC.

Cheers man, i think i'm leaning toward Touchable to begin with and then keeping an eye on Livecontrol/Griid.
I also like the look of TouchOSC, but it will probably be more of a distraction for me at this point so i'll come back to it later.

LSZ will be doing cartwheels when he finds out Jobs is hell bent on adding wireless sync over wifi between idevices and computers. They’ve been working on it for awhile but there’s issues keeping a stable connection.

HOWEVER carbon fiber is going to somehow play a part of it meaning it will only be available on the next gen devices starting with iPods. :x
