I think they're very important... I think the Islamic idea of the One God that's applicable and universal to all of the infinite universe is very true; I think the different cultures and stories of prophets and writings of people with insight we have are just different distortions and interpretations (in the light of different historical circumstances) of The True Nature Of Everything(tm); this is in itself not an unislamic idea, only Islam thinks it ends with the whole truth being revealed by the capital P Prophet Muhammed, which I'm not so sure of. There is not a shred of doubt in my mind that Muhammed was a very insightful person, like Lao Tzu, master Linchi, Bodhidharma, Siddharta Gautama, Jesus, the great peacemaker of the Six Nations in North East America, Diogenes, Nietzsche, Rumi, Hakim Bey, Hesse, Pirsig and Richard fucking Bach... there's plenty of them, all pointing towards .

The bible (and other religious texts) is not a huge crock of shit, it had a lot of interesting teachings (still has some), before it got warped and re-interpreted to suit the Church's manipulative needs.

As you guys are saying, the core of all religions is basically the same. The problems always come up when they start to believe their interpretation of things (stories of creation, laws of living etc) is the only 'correct' version.

As a (former?) leftist, I tend to think nothing comes purely from above. Religions are allways expressions of people, culture and society.
Religions may be a way to form people and societies, good or bad. To do that, thay have to have some insight into people to find the interfaces to act on. Receptors.
I'm no expert in the history of religions, but I think it's a fact that when a religion like the old greek went more and more monotheistic, that reflected the state consolidating it's central power etc.
With less central power, you should find more of different house gods in every corner.

That's what I like about buddhism, the way I imagine it... no central God at all.
