I think we can all agree that no matter what your political view is, or how true or misguided it is, absolutely nobody is going “there’s some awesome great happy times just around the bend!”

Carry on debating who’s or what’s fault it is.

fault is irrelevant at this point.

the website was fucked. now it works. people are signing up for plans and saving money.

Just back in from a visit to the States.

It was really weird, being in a country where a significant group of not very well off people seemed to think a plan to ensure affordable medical care was a violation of their rights. It was like visiting Mars, or the planet Zog. Very strange.

^ what's even weirder is when poor working class people (probably the same ones you're talking about) are die hards that vote Republican without question. always blows my fucking mind. 8O <- me.

why would you vote to make your off site boss rich off your back?? i'm not saying that voting Dem is better, but at least there's typically a little more to their agenda than just stifling and exploiting.

OT, but I was recently listening to a couple American podcasters talk about how things just felt better outside this country. Like when you live here you don’t realize you have this underlying fear of being shot until you go to another country and that’s not even a possibility.

Or :(

another way to look at that; if you're a shooter... in the states, you have to worry about getting shot back. :|

That only happens in Texas.

And we never hear about it because liberals control the media.

Even though there's a new mass shooting every other week there's never an armed good guy at the scene. I picture the shooter going "What? Nobody is going to stop this shit?! I guess I'll just shoot myself."

:x

^ hmpf. true.

well, there was the guy at the L.A. airport last week. didn't they wing him?

I think security winged the airport shooter, not some random armed citizen.

Anyhow, if guns are going to be legal in this country then getting shot should be fully covered by Obamacare. Or maybe the shooter should get the bill. But they probably don’t have the money or insurance. So maybe for an extra $5 a month you can get uninsured shooter coverage.

It's not that weird, but it is a key question and the answer eludes many around the centre in politics. In the UK we had a Tory/Liberal coalition elected a couple of years ago. The Tories were unelectable for 15 years after Thatcher.

New Labour has failed abysmally, as I predicted in the mid 80s at a party full of Blair supporters who were slagging Marxists, before I told them I was in the Militant.

Not a lucky guess of course. It was no great feat for me to predict that.

The idea that the Labour Party were conned with was that they needed to lose the left-wing socialist image to get elected. Some even believed they would then go back to being left wing once elected!

But we Marxists in the Militant, now the Socialist Party, said this was a con and would not work. Now the facts are evident. Labour lost the election after being in power for 13 years.

This happens a lot and in America the Democrats have always been like New Labour.

Ok, so they are a bit to the left of the Republicans. But not much. Not nearly enough to offer a clear alternative. That is the point. That is what we said back in the 1980s when we were being kicked out of the Labour Party. It's still the case today.

The reason the poor in America repeatedly vote and fight against their own self interest is quite simple, and I think this might purely be an American mentality. No matter what their current economic situation is they fully believe they will be rich some day if they just apply themselves or play the lottery enough. They see anything the rich are against as something the future rich them should be against and they don't want to support the poor (their former/current self). This is the impact of the long preached but now mythical American Dream. Maybe, and I mean a strong maybe, Americans didn't start seeing it as a myth until about 4 or 5 years ago. There's many who still believe because politicians keep saying its theirs for the taking. No, it's not.

Shit, there's people who are poor now who don't even know it because they have a car (that is 10 years old) and a decent roof over their head (rent controlled apartment). They aren't that guy who lives out of a shopping cart and sleeps in the gutter. That's what poor looks like, right?

That's all been true for a long time, but now I think it also gets amplified between people freaking out over a black president (still) and the word socialism (We are talking about Hitler, right?) being tossed out all over the place. I don't remember the term socialism being used at all until Obama got elected. Previously the only time I heard socialism mentioned was in reference to Hitler. Gee, I wonder why so many Americans only make that connection now. :x

This is a little more condescending than we're used to from you... Aside from the fact that it's grossly inaccurate, you're also suggesting that you know what's best for the poor working class better than they do. This is not the H2Only I know and love.
