Hidden Driveways wrote:I AM BUYING AN iPAD THIS WEEK!!

Woo hoo!

I'm going with a white iPad 2 with 32GB. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a WiFi model, and get a tethering plan for my phone. This is a good week, because I'm getting an iPad and I'm getting a new iPhone! My wife's old iPhone 3G is dreadfully slow, so I'm going to get a white iPhone 4, and give her my white 3Gs.

I know, I know... The iPhone 5 will be available in 6 months... don't buy now... blah blah. It's a sacrifice. I gotta save my woman from her prehistorically slow 3G.

So anyhow, I have a question for the iNut gallery:

Am I making the right move by getting a WiFi iPad with a tethering plan for the iPhone? I'm out of contract, so I could go for either Verizon or AT&T. I think I'm going to stay with AT&T. I find that I use the phone and Internet together often enough to warrant it as a necessity. The thought of being put on perma-hold with a Verizon iPhone would S U C K.

I'm planning on tethering the iPad, with further makes Verizon look like suckville because you can't tether and talk at the same time. So I'm 90% sure that AT&T will win 2 more years of my business.

If anyone has any insight on tethering plans and iPads, I'm curious what you think.

And I saw the Titans show too. It was okay (they skip A LOT of important stuff). The film Pirates of Silicon Valley was a lot more interesting (but now hopelessly out of date).

The thing that I learned most from Titans was how Steve bounced back by transforming Pixar from a pretty meaningless animation studio that George Lucas didn't want to bother with into a $3 billion dollar profit. That's pure badass in my book.

I may be a little fuzzy on the math but here’s how I see it. If you go the tethering plan you are stuck with it for the duration of your contract (an extra $20-$40 a month?). If you get an iPad with 3g you pay month to month with no contract. So when you need it you pay then and there, cancel it and you’ll still be good for the next 30 days. Don’t pay for it again until you need it. You’d probably be surprised how infrequently you need 3g. Plus always having to have the iPad in the vicinity of your iPhone is kind of a boo for me – possible poor signal and having to have both devices with a good charge.

I don't know the exact numbers on it either, but if it's $20 more a month - that means that the extra expense of the 3G card works out to 6 months of tethering charges.

Yes.. it sucks that you're locked into the contract. But this is also part of the beauty of it for me. I'm a cheap ass. If I have the option to not pay for 3G service, then I'll likely rarely treat myself to it. If I'm locked in, I'll make a point of using it to its fullest.

A big part of this decision is my work situation. The firewall is so strict that I seriously can barely do my job. However, I'm allowed to use an iPad at my desk, so I'll have free reign of the Internet (however Flashless and slow it may be). I used to pay $60 a month for a Verizon AirCard for my laptop. This seems like a deal.

Being able to tether my MacBook Pro is a huge plus too.

I'm pretty good with battery charging & cycling.

My work (for the next 4 days) also has the internet locked down tight and won’t give anybody the password for the wifi to use on their personal devices. So there has been a few times the 3g on my iPhone and iPad has served a purpose, but I rarely bring my iPad to work (too freaked out about it possibly “walking away”) and it’s extremely rare I need 3g on it outside work.

But I see your points and why that would work for you. Had to kind of chuckle though at your “I’m going to go out of my way to be out of wifi range if I’m paying for tethering, damnit!” attitude. Like you’re going to be going around town shouting “Shit! Still within some free wifi range!” :P

I'm using my iPad live as an instrument, driving plugins in Live.

Basically, I'm using Pianist Pro and its "scale piano" via midi over wifi on ad hoc network created at the start of each session to drive Kontakt (for a grand piano), NI's B4 and a synclavier and electric piano VST whose names I can't recall right now.

The "scale piano" lets you basically say what scale you want to play in, and those are the only notes under your fingers. The octaves of the root note (which can be changed via a small keyboard representation above the playing surface) are darker, so you still have a sense of where you are in the scale.

I have all 4 VSTs loaded in a saved Live session, so when I set up (I'm mainly a drummer, but we have 2 drummers in the band, so I've been switching off more often) I just create the adhoc network on the macbook, join it on the iPad, load up my saved Live session and load Pianist Pro on the iPad, and I'm ready to roll. Fat B4 organ sounds like nobody's business.

There are some other apps that either do similar things to PP, or will in their next version (ThumbJam, SynthX, Control and a few others), but what I love about this one app is that as you move your fingers vertically up and down the keys, yo're sending MOD data, so when I'm playing with B4 it's dead simple to handle the vibrato/leslie effects.

Lately I've been screwing around with various delay settings in Live, which make a hammond B3 take off into orbit. SUCH cool stuff, honestly goosebump-inspiring.

So that's how I'm using the iPad as an instrument. I'd love to be able to use it to build loop-based tunes as easily as I can in Live, but nothing out there is quite as good at the beatmatching and looping stuff as Ableton, in my experience so far. I've been trying Looptastic and Studio.HD, filling them up with loops that I use in Live all the time, but they never match up to the measures properly, which makes it incredibly frustrating. I load the same loops in Live, and I'm lost in making music, not fighting the tools.

So, here's one more vote for a version of Live for the iPad. I'd drop the cash on it in an instant.

Oh, and the IODock looks awesome, but it falls one step short of being the holy grail -- if it was also a USB audio interface, I'd drop everything to pick one up. Hell, I'd sell my car and bike everywhere if this was possible. Right now it's just one more USB interface and more cabling when playing live....

[edit] wow, I haven't posted here in eons, that's quite an ancient sig...

I heard that HP has to sell 7 laptops for every 1 laptop Apple sells to make the same profit.

I’m convinced in the world of tablets HP is going to be selling at a deficit just so they’re not looked at as out of the loop within the industry. And I don’t think there’s been a competitor tablet yet that production schedules weren't greatly reduced after being on the market for only a few months.

Did you watch the video on that page (you know, the video with the uninspired electronic music in it)? The best part is this:

Wireless charging.*

However they never explain what the asterik means. However, with the current understanding of what's possible with the physical world, one can assume that the asterisk means to inform you that wireless charging is impossible. That dock either has a wire running out of the back of it, or a battery in it. Neither of which is wireless charging.

I actually read about a company working on wireless charging using extremely low level sound waves. Interesting shit, but I don’t know how far into the future they’re looking. And even then it looked like what they have going on is wireless adaptors so you would still have to plug whatever you are charging into something, just not the wall directly.

Have any of you fine people found something decent for making loop-based tracks on the iPad yet? Studio.HD is driving me mad.

You'll want to check out Electrify. Loop based. Very nice.
