oh well I'm that much closer.

If you like dropbox, check out the iPad app called GoodReader. It remains the best app I've ever bought. It can basically read any kind of file..PowerPoint, PDF, video, jpg, Word, Excel, etc etc. And it's got an excellent connection with your DropBox account so's you can grab things without ever syncing.

If that's not enough, it gives you a standard Mac/Windows type file structure. Add or move folders in whatever structure you wish, lock those folders with password protection, etc.

Fucking BRILLIANT.

Indeed. The main issue as I see it is as far as music apps is there is no set standard for ALL music apps to share data with each other or with your computer(s) and there's no folder type location on an idevice where you can just store everything and point your music apps to it. It's all on an app per app basis and whatever method they choose to use.

And I hate to say it, but this is why music apps on the ipad are still toys. I can't seriously get a decent library of sounds on it to use in my apps. And I just haven't found the time to invest in figuring a way that actually works for me to be able to store and use audio files. I'm sure there are things I don't know about.

For example, say I record some random sound with voice memos. How do I get that into Nanostudio or Beatmaker? They can each record a sample but what if you don't know which app you're going to use it with? Are there third party apps for this kind of thing or does the system just plain suck? And why can't I name my friggin voice memo recordings? Is there a better recording app I should be using (preferrably one that magically can have it's audio files used by other apps)? :?

this is quite disturbing, I shudder to think that it's even possible that this is the only type of thing that there apparently is not a freakin app for? what happen to there's an app for everything :x

The problem is that there are multiple methods but all the music app developers can’t get together and decide on just one and when developing an app it’s probably an afterthought and maybe depends on the selfishness of the developer.

but wouldn't you think that at least regarding music apps that this would be a no brainer issue, if getting audio in and out of your 'music' app is an afterthought well fuck somebody get peter kirn on the telly and tell him to write an article about this issue

After the nightmare of cloning my MBP drive to my iMac and wrongly thinking my music software would just work without a hitch I was hesitant about syncing my idevices. I stood there for awhile with the cable millimeters from my iPhone like Indiana Jones guesstimating the weight difference between the bag of sand and the golden idol, but when I plugged it in it worked without a hitch or question. :)

Also noticed that iTunes added a feature where it will automatically download media or apps to your computer without having to sync. This is great because I sometimes buy an app on my iPad that I also want on my iPhone or I buy music on my MBP (now my iMac) and also want it on my Air and I don’t have to manually transfer now. You can designate on each computer what type of files you want it to automatically download to that computer, like I don’t need to download apps to my Air because I don’t sync my idevices to that computer.

Look at like the old hardware days. When emu was making a sampler it wasn't exactly a priority to make sure it could read akai format and vice versa.

which olden days are you talkin about, everything had to read akai format, even when everyone went software you wasn' doin nuthin if you didn't chicken systems translate those giblets.

anyway that auto sync even without sync sounds nice as long as you can control it well, I don't have an iphone but I use itunes as my sample organizer, if I can do something like name a playlist 'audio i just edited' and get that shit to transfer over from an ipad to macbook air then that'll do

isn't this what you signed up for? Apple will tell you what the best way is... not the other way around. The fact that you want to think different is ok as long as you think the same as Apple right? well, for consumers anyway... apparently for devs... not so much.

for example beats me says that the method of accessing/moving your files is, basically, to have a wireless connection and/or some 3rd party application or website... is this because there is no better way or is it because depending solely on wireless transfers is actually the best way?

you can call it ugly all you want, but shoving a thumb drive in a USB port, making the transfer to a logical folder/location and then unplugging the USB drive is simple, quick and doesn't require a service contract or Bluetooth on both sides of the equation.

just when i start to think that having an iPad would be great, i read things like this and remember why i like having a little control and some choices that don't require a download from "the app store".

Honestly it’s a bit difficult discussing the different methods of transferring data for music apps with people who don’t actually have an iPad. Some apps will do things the way you want them to and others won’t. It’s different from developer to developer. The best you can do is get an iPad, test out the apps, and contact developers with your wishlist. Maybe some day there will be a consensus by all developers on which method to use but right now it’s a free for all.

But one thing’s for certain. You’re definitely not going to have more options on an Android tablet even if you can plug in a USB drive. The apps and stability just aren’t there.

So pick your poison.

Wait wait wait, guys. HOOOOOOlllld on a second. There IS an emerging audio copy and paste standard now seen across a number of apps and it's called...oddly enough...AudioCopy/AudioPaste. Apps like Molten, SampleLab, etc etc etc. The list is actually quite long at this point.

So far as an ipad owner, my pick still goes only to my laptop. I feel like I'm suffocating as soon as I start playing with any music apps that are meant to actually write music (ie,beside single synths like morphwhiz). But it's great as a control surface for things like touchable and the orb, that's for sure.

But seriously, a simple foder structure that all apps could access to grab samples - that would possibly make all the difference. If I could dump a large selection of my samples onto it and access it from any app, I'd probably actually use things like Nanostudio and Beatmaker 2. But I'm not doubling up my space requirements to put a sample library in both or trying to figure out which samples I want to give to which application.

Bro, have you tried the iMS-20 or NLogSynthPro apps?

Not toys. Not at all.
