I just got the Targus Cool Mat for Mac.
It's obviously too early to say if it actually contributes to cooling the laptop but it's flawed: too light, the laptop actually slides on it. You have to be really soft on the keyboard and not put the weight of your hands on it or else it will slide of the cooling unit.
There's probably a much better option somewhere.
Cheers!

even could add some aluminium sheet for that cool look folks seem to be after .
never understood why people buy stands for XXX $£$ when its well cheap to make one that will prolly be nicer overall, guess some have too much moneys ?
Making it out of wood is the opposite of what I want. Wood insulates and would keep the laptop too warm.
Instead of reinventing the wheel and trying to start a steel mill I'd rather buy one for under 50 bucks and be done with it.
Oh and did I mention I live in NYC and currently lack a toolshed/workshop. Now do you understand?
no drama each to there own and all that , but man , you don't have to use wood or reinvent the wheel! ....... , as for "start a steel mill"
Do you not have any body within your circle who can weld ? , maybe I'm just lucky I dunno , thing is any decent welder could make a metal stand in less time it takes to cook a decent meal and for a darn site less than £50 too.
A friend of mine is making mine , whatever shapes I want added , totally unique !!
I'll spend my money on music ta very much , the less I can spend on stands n shit like that the better imho
do you understand ? ( sorry, lame attempt at injecting humor into this post)
maybe I should get him to make a bunch and sell 'em on ebay or somethin ??

plastics shops are outstanding for us city dwellers with limited space to make a mess. they're little pricey but if you keep the design simple and glue it yourself you can make whatever you want.
I dunno, a square piece of acrylic a little bigger than your laptop's footprint with a big hole in it for air flow, glue strips of acrylic along the sides to hold the laptop in place and some 1" round acrylic dowels as feet.
if you got a little creative you could take a computer fan and glue/screw it on there for forced air flow, maybe even power it from a USB port (5V, 500mA.)

Ditto ... time is money and I have neither the patience, will or skill to build anything. Would be cheaper for me to buy a truck load of stands than to try and make one!CHARLIE! wrote:Im just going to buy one. I have a fulltime job I cant go around trying to make a stand.
Id rather fork over $30 bucks for a decent peice that has been tested and constructed professionally.

These are both great stands. The Logitech offers 4 USB ports as well, and the two pieces slide apart to fit inside a backpack or gig bag.

Charlie, I have the little Targus you linked in the beginning, and it's great! Really works well, both for ventilation (don't care much about that, though) and for ergonomics, too.

I also have two of these for gigging:

- "slightly" modified to go a bit lower.
Also "slightly" modified, this time the metal has been unfolded to "cup" the end of a laptop for stability:

Its not that wood will insulate it, its the way you use the wood, or plastic or metal that can have insulating tendencies.CHARLIE! wrote:Wood insulates and would keep the laptop too warm.
