Is Bioshock good? I got kinda pissed at Fallout 3 when I beat it, lamest ending ever for a video game. Anchorage was ok, kinda fun, but I've heard pretty good things about Bioshock.

I just want the new Final Fantasy to come out :(

So, Capcom decided to ship from as far away from me as they could, so my preorder is showing up tomorrow...lame, although I didn't have time this week to play it anyway. :? It had better show up tomorrow, or I'm going to...

...cry myself to sleep tomorrow night.

Bioshock is a ton of fun, one of the best games in recent years actually.

I haven't beat Fallout yet, and I am in no rush. I am having fun wandering and don't want to be bummed by the ending from what I keep hearing.

It arrived today.....

....so....so beautiful.....should've sent.....a poet.....

on the flip side, the collectors edition was overpriced, and the chris redfield figurine is about two inches tall.

Movement is what I expected, although use of screen space is throwing me off a little, but otherwise, the sound design is killer, surround sound and big screen is the only way to play, and the whole partner thing doesn't suck near as much as RE0 did, so I can live with it.

My friend and I have been playing co-op online and we're about half way through. Definitely lacking in the atmosphere of RE4, but it's still a solidly fun game that has provided more than a few laughs for us.

So, I've been snowed in today, and decided since I have a little time to spare, that I would dig in to RE5...

My personal review on the game:

Keep in mind that this is coming from a fanboy of RE, and by fanboy, I don't mean I'm such a fanboy that I could take down RE1 with just a knife in under three hours (it's been done), but I've owned, played, and beaten to death every RE game that didn't come out on a portable system. That said...

GRAPHICS: Best they've ever been, ever.

GAMEPLAY: Same as RE4, which I fell in love with because it smoked the gameplay of all previous versions. The characters move fine, it just takes a little getting used to for people who are new to the game. Not being able to run while shooting isn't that much of a bother, either, and is reminiscent of news footage of SWAT raiding a crackhouse - the shooting style is very deliberate, and you'll always get a better shot at something if you're standing still and aiming straight, so it makes sense.

INVENTORY: I don't care much for the inventory setup...pausing the game to allow for inventory access was a plus in prior games; leaving the background running while you're stuck in inventory mode makes the game harder, but it forces you to be a little more considerate of how prepared you are when you walk into a situation, which is never a bad thing.

SCREEN REAL ESTATE: I preferred RE4's screen setup to this, but I can work around it. The map is the main issue - it's far bigger than previous on-screen maps.

PLAYING WITH A PARTNER: RE0 pretty much sucked for this, and that's coming from a fan. RE4 was better, but the real bonuses in RE5 are A) your partner is armed, and B) you can't accidentally shoot her like you could Ashley in RE4.

CREEP FACTOR: Not as creepy as RE1, but at the time, nothing was as creepy as RE1. It's sort of like seeing a Troma movie for the first time...all of a sudden, you're like WTF, and after that, nothing ever meets that standard of "holy shit" again. I will say that this is better, like Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" was better than Romero's; when Snyder gave his zombies speed, it really upped the scare factor, as opposed to Romero just doing something original at the time. Same applies here - the infected move faster, come at you out of nowhere, and land on your head if you aren't paying attention, making for a more intense experience.

SOUND DESIGN / SOUNDTRACK: Both are great, and if you are listening in surround as I am, you'll find that they definitely add to the creep factor - there's nothing like hearing a 1-ton mutant insect buzzing around your head as it's moving...if you don't have surround, you're not getting the whole experience.

CHAINSAW DECAPITATION: Wow. Really, that's it. Wow. Better than RE4, and a quality death, if there ever was one.

Other than that, I've only gotten stuck (like "can't move" stuck) once, I think that the walking speed in the game could be a tad faster, sniper scopes aren't the quality they were in RE4, and Irving could be way less cheesy, but all in all, a great game, and worth the money for the standard version (the collectors version is not worth it, however - just get the game, skip the extras).

My .02.

Hmm. I still think I'm going to get Red Alert 3 today, instead of RE5. Nice review though, JD!

General question. A friend and I are moving into a new place and both of us have PS3s. Could we get away with buying one copy of a game and one of us installs the game on their drive and then both of us can play online? Neither of us have done networked game play before.

I bought an XBox 360 Elite with RE5 last week.
I haven't owned a console since the N64 so it took me some getting used to but the game is great.
Yes the controls took me a while to get the hang of but hey it's not meant to be a 1st person shooter. I do think the real-time inventory does make things a bit too challenging sometimes when you get into tight situations but I guess with good planning it should be ok.
The graphics are absolutely stunning in both design and animation.
I'm also playing Rez HD which is a lot of fun and beatiful to look at as well. Got Halo 3 and Gears of War coming in the mail sometime soon too. Definitely gonna get Bioshock at some point too. I've some catching up to do game-wise :)

No, because generally the games don't 'install' and you still need the disk to run it. However, if you had something like the new SOCOM game, it's cheap as chips AND you can download it from the PS3 store. Then you'd both have a copy and every one is happy.

I bought the 'Afro Samurai' game today - traded SH for it. Gonna get well and truly stuck in tonight!

Thanks for the answer. I've been in the process of moving for the past couple weeks so haven't gotten a lot of game time in. This thread is making me wanna play!

Plus we'll be running the PS3 on a projector so it's going to be big Big BIG!!
