A year ago I was set on buying an Eventide Pitchfactor for this purpose but after trying one out I was disappointed with the tracking ability. It was better than most but fell short of ideal. I bought an Electroharmonix Hog and haven't looked back. I send 2 channels to ableton, 1 clean as clean bass, and the other whatever I configure through the hog pedal board. Often I'll send a powerchord (octave and octave plus a 5th) an octave up with a subtle blend of 2 and 3 octaves up to add some harmonic beef. Add some distortion to that and you're rockin (I use guitar rig on the Hog signal and Ampex SVX on the dry bass).

Not cheap by any means but if this is what you are looking for I haven't found a more reliable way to do it. I recommend getting the $100 foot controller also. Remember the youtube demo is on guitar not bass and with lower signals tracking is harder to ensure (making the right product choice even more important).
I haven't yet tried any of the shifting plugins mentioned here, would love to hear how they compare to the Hog if anyone has experience?
