most mixing desks have insert points for sticking external devices directly into the signal chain... the insert point is usually a TRS jack... an insert cable is usually a Y-cable with a TRS jack on one end (which plugs into the desk), and two TS jacks on the other end... you plug the TS jacks into the input and output of your external device, e.g. a compressor or whatever...

Balanced from things that can be run balanced, though I only notice the low amount of background his when the moog is off, that thing has a LOUD fan!
