OT: Martial Arts - My new Keep Fit
Re: OT: Martial Arts - My new Keep Fit
^^^ Haha, how did I know it was gonna be Toby Imada's upside down inverted triangle on Jorge Masvidal. That was absolutely insane!! Definitely takes the cake for the submission of the year. In fact I thought it was about ten times cooler than Aoki's gogo from the mount on Nagata in Dream not too long ago.
I don't think Imada's gonna get by Alvarez in the finals though.
Yeah Rashad is extremely quick and explosive. It's going to be a great fight.

Took my first cut to the face tonight
Just a small one on the bridge of the nose. My mommy would tell me to get over it
We were clinch sparring, and somehow in close quarters I took one right on the shnoz. Problem when your green like me, and spar with another greeny, its hard to know limits. This guy just lite into me. Anyways, a bit more sore than usual. They made an announcement about an MMA tournament here in Auckland some time in June. There are 14 fights on the card. Might just have to take the boy and check it out.

it's similar to playing hold em', risk, dj'ing, etc. it's more difficult to perform well when your trained to expect responses, and your opponent is just going through the motions based purely on instinct. I've found that a solid foundation of the basic stuff is most useful in those situations.Problem when your green like me, and spar with another greeny, its hard to know limits

ITF TKD. The Sensi dudes are 4th dan and 2nd dan. Monday nights is very formal, training for patterns, kicks etc and a focus on tournament sparing. Wednesdays is less formal with a focus on fitness and general, almost street smart sparring. A good mix of belts up to black. I guess last night I got caught out with another one of those young bucks eager to not be shown up by 'old man.' He was a bit gangly and uncoe, if you know what I mean. Also being new he did not have gloves, so got carried away. I am actually also carrying a left side muscle strain and a wicked bruised top of my left foot. I attempted a side piercing kick but got block by an elbow. It freakin hurt. I'm kinda counting on being knocked around a bit to 'toughen up.' I guess its the same as playing rugby or ice hockey where there is a bit of punishment dealt to the body. You learn to sport it and get on with it. (we will see how I feel in a month though)ThrowAway wrote:^^^^^what?

I can tell you with absolute authority (my partner Mike's father-in-law was the All Blacks' doctor for a time) that half the All Blacks are taking Voltaren anti-inflamatory pills constantly.gjm wrote:I'm kinda counting on being knocked around a bit to 'toughen up.' I suppose there is always the chance of a really nice injury that has long after affects. *hmmppf*

Re: OT: Martial Arts - My new Keep Fit
full body conditioning coupled with extensive streching with a personal trainer will help you be more durable.Expect the body aches to get worse for a month or two but after that it will be the best feeling ever. I love being in shape, Im going to get on it again.
double step side kicks are the only thing Ive kept and used from my short exp with tkd. Its very easy to floor people with that. In a situation where they dont see it coming its down right devastating and brutal.

wrong thread.
all I can add to this thread is that I'm a fast runner and quick to bleed.

Re: OT: Martial Arts - My new Keep Fit
you shouldn't talk about fight club..you know the rules!
wow.. a martial arts thread
I do some Tai-Chi ..(I know it doesn't count)
when I was in highschool used to be a Goju-Ryu karate trainer (kids group) back in the day..(sparring was my favorite ! loads of fun!)
I miss those days..I was in shape back then..
if I go back now...I'll puke my lungs out in 20 mins.
it'll have to be something less demanding.. like Jyu-Jitsu or Aikido...
(of course I'll need to gradually get in shape for those too)
all n all it's great you picked up this activity... it's a great workout..
and the physical contact element builds up and sharpens your reactions
but remember to keep it safe...
Tae Kwan Do is a lot of jumping around.. that causes stress on the joints of knees and feet..
it might be good for young kids when their bodies are building up.. but at a certain age.. it's counter-productive...
you'll learn new 'tricks' at the expense of burning out your knees...

Re: OT: Martial Arts - My new Keep Fit
just wanna share a fun video of my exercise, taken with a Nokia N97. It was a spontaneous take, with no preparation
I'm mostly doing tai chi and yoga now, more into the soft zone. But sometime still do the power training as well. http://youtu.be/OpYkPwIfCUY

I have no idea what you did there, but it looked good
I quit TKD late last year. To many negatives with the experience.
Looking for a more gentle replacement...

Re: OT: Martial Arts - My new Keep Fit
Did WTF TKD for about 8,5 years (and was an instructor for 4 years) but then life came in between. After that I tried Han Moo Do but the instructors were quite bad (they kept on trying to prove themselves to me). Also tried Tai Chi but it didn't work out for me 'cause I was used to fast paced exercises.
Been thinking of begining Jeet Kune Do but haven't really gotten around to it. I don't really have time to train properly and that might decrease my motivation. Before I was a family man I used to train TKD two times a day.
