I always forget how much fun it is until I get into a good club on a good night (I'm 36.) I've never noticed age differences unless it's all kids, then it's just lame.

I think people any older than us 30-somethings didn't grow up on electronica, so they're much less likely to dance to it.

At the ripe old age of 41, I'm often aware that many in the crowd might well be half my age. I had the same feelings in my 30s for a bit, but now I'm just so old that I'm no threat. I'm convinced that playing music keeps you young, it's simple as that. Dancing keeps me fit, I work up a real sweat every night I play - shorts and a T-shirt for me, not strut-wear. As Confucius said: "Never go into battle with a man who cannot dance".

Possibly another misconception on my part, but I would think people who actually DJ or perform some kind of dance music get a little more dance floor cred into their twilight years. But at the same since a large portion of Electronica remains faceless you could probably be dancing next to a hit making producer and nobody would know it. I'm still confused by DJs who can't dance for shit.

We seem to be focusing mainly on the rave scene when giving props to the elderly but if the same elder went into a Hip Hop club and started crumping would he get the same props? Or would he look way out of place? Are we supposed to "dance our age"?

I agree you should just do what you feel but for the sake of discussion do you ever see anything that just weirds you out based on the person's age?

Nah... I can't say its age specifically - I see inspirational Groovy Older People at festivals along with Tragic Aging Hippies - it really is all about the person themselves. Do they seem self-aware? or self-deluded? Who am I to judge anyway...? I'd just tend to gravitate towards one and avoid the other like the plague. As others have said it's all about the person, not the age. You get your cool elders just as much as your drug-fucked young munters.

when i was young, i could wait until midnight to go out. it was nothing.
fact is now I would dance more if the dancing started at say 6:00 PM.

dunno why i get tired, so early. I worked in the bars, closing 'em nearly every night until I was 33. it's only since I buckled down and got a day job that I simply cannot stay up late.

all this career crap is overrated. maybe I should go back to getting people schnockered.

I'm an odd cat when it comes to sleep patterns. I have to be up for work at 5:30 and on most days I'm up before the alarm goes off. Even on weekends I tend to be up by 6, and this would be even if I was up until 2 AM. But it's generally around 2 PM I crash at least mentally and try to get a nap in then I get my second wind around 5 or 6 PM. Of course partying the night before is always the wild card but even then I usually keep the same awake time schedule, I just don't get anything done. And if it's a week night there's no way in Hell I can make it into work.

Damn, wasn't too long ago I could go out until 2 and still be at work at 6 with no problems.

dude, until I was 30 my winters went like this:

up 9:00
first tram at the ski resort, there before 10:00 for 10:30 first tram.
ski until 2:00
leave for work at 4:00PM (one hour commute)

work 5:00 to bar closing (2:00 AM)
a few drinks after work, drive home get home around 4:00 AM

rinse and repeat.

I did this daily. 80+ days skiing at the resort every winter.

no wonder my back hurts now.

my wife and I agree with you. We hooked thanks to techno music and we both love it. we went for the music and long to go back, but responsibilities are a bitch.

I have 2 daughters.... I agree with you more than you would know. I love my kids.....I never would have guessed that fate would bring me into fatherhood, but the identity clash with my artistic side can make crazy quite often.

I'm approaching 40 in a few months and I have discovered that I don't like to go out dancing as much as I used to. The reality is, if I am not performing a set that evening, I probably would be home with the wife and kids, watching a movie or something.

My wife loves to go out with me but complains because I cannot dance like I used to. After a few hours on the dance floor, my knees begin to kill me. lol. So I have to stop. Yup, I'm old

I feel you, ditto on the partner, and giving 100% to the family. The past 2 years I have been a Mr. mom while I make a career change into health care. The pay-off has been tremendous as far as kids benefiting from the pro-active father in their lives.....I still have identity challenges even after all the responsibilities are set and done. I just can't get involved in music projects in SF (50 miles from me), where the real talent and scene is....

@aisling- I hear you man... the city is too far to drive but the action is all up that direction apparently. I don't even HAVE kids and I'm too tired to go that far.

Especially to find out I'm too old looking for the crowd I'm trying to mingle with!? guh... Maybe I should try having kids!? At least then I might feel productive. OR dye my hair darker and see if I can hang with beats.
