Has anyone every used Speakerphone 2? I just checked out audioease.com for it. Sounds good, but I'm sure I could create the same style in Ableton.

Or do a search for wow and flutter vst. I think It's only windows though. It's a fave of mine.

This is a great thread. A+! When I was first learning to sequence, on a Tandy computer running Sequencer Plus Gold in 1992, I used to record my "masterpieces" to HiFi VHS and I can confirm it's almost idiotproof and provides really great sound. I had no idea that professional studios had used the same technique. Crazy! I have one of those tapes around here, now I have to listen to it. I'm preparing to cringe at my 16-year-old sense of composition and sound design.

One thing to look for is VHF tapes have different play speeds! On your old VHF players you could manually select the play/record speed. A lot of the newer ones are automatic. IIRC, for a typical tape there was a SP speed (2 hours), a LP speed (4 hours), and a EP speed (6 hours). Most commercial tapes were recorded at SP, which yields the highest quality. I'd imagine this is the speed you want to use if you can.

funnily enough i had a jam with a friend in one of the meeting rooms where i used to work before christmas. we recorded all the sound and filmed ourselves too straight onto the old vhs that was installed in the room. i havent done much with it yet apart from listen and watch it all about 4 times, but it sounds ace (though i would say that ). i need to get it edited and sorted out better

but yeah as you say - it is fairly idiot proof. sometimes when recording stuff digitally if you get an error you can end up losing the whole lot. but with tape (video and audio) if it's recording, it's there. i still love vhs and 4 track cassette stuff. all fun

Just what i have been thingking lately! I just dont have an VHS player anymore (got rid off my TV like 5 years ago..). I'm wondering if i could re-create that sound with ableton plugins? That would be awesome!!

Ha! I still have a JVC SuperVHS, an old Sony Betamax and a Hi-8 Camcorder stored in the attic somewhere with boat loads of unused tape. Gonna have to dust that off tonight and experiment.

I've tried the AudioEase SpeakerPhone solution mentioned earlier. It is really nice and quite convincing. I def recommend it!
I wanted to reproduce the same effect inside Live, using Live devices and came up with this http://www.afrodjmac.com/blog/2013/06/0 ... 0-vhs-rack It's the AfroDJMac VHS Rack. It's free and made up of frequency shifters, chorus, eqs... I think it's a pretty cool sound and a close approximation.

One more refinement you may want to consider:
The automation is the same color as the waveforms & MIDI notes. Easier to see the distinction if they were different.

i think the VCR is the filter.

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I figured that may be less intrusive and annoying than creating an entirely different post about the exact same topic.

I've been thinking about trying to do exactly this, record audio from Ableton onto tape (VHS). Everyone is saying "just record it to VHS." But yeah... How in the heck am I supposed to get the audio in Ableton on to a VHS?! Is it really as simple as like a 1/8" to 1/8" audio jack plugged in somewhere to the VHS player and then pressing record and then pressing play in Ableton?

I wouldn't know how to begin to do this but they are making it sound as if it is super simple.

^ Yes... take an output from your audio interface like 1/4 inch or RCA jacks (if you have them) and then [use any necessary adapters to] plug directly into the VCR.

Shit... Yeah, it's been so long since I've looked at a VHS player I sort of forgot it could be that easy. That does make sense though, thanks. Getting it back into the digital realm with any degree of fidelity is actually probably going to be the trickiest part.
