Meaningless semantics. FL Studio users who bought earlier versions get the latest when it comes out.

Sure, they have upgraded packages, but they still make a version available with all the new features and workflow improvements. For free.

Not true for Ableton users.

It's not like you can do anything useful with FL Studio anyway. It's a tracker with a fancy graphical display. Its only saving graces are its preset libraries and built-in effects and synths.

not true, people who bought fruityloops 7 don't get fruityloops 8 for free, they do however get fruityloops 7.01 7.02 7.03 7.04 and so on for free. thats the difference between an update and an upgrade.

actually now that I'm reading their page I'm more confused on the issue, they seem to do it intentionally as updates and upgrades are in fact very different yet they are ambiguous about which one they are talking about.

"we believe you should have the functionality you paid for bugfixed for as long as we develop it." but I think that sums it up. THE FUNCTIONALITY YOU PAID FOR bugfixed. meaning you don't get more functionality (that would be an upgrade)

THE FUNCTIONALITY YOU PAID FOR bugfixed. meaning you don't get more functionality than you originally paid for (thats an upgrade)

I know this cause I paid for fruityloops 3.0 back in the day thinking I'd get 4.0, 5.0 for free. turns out that wasn't true. Maybe it's true now, but if so they need to use the word upGRADES and maybe change that "functionality you paid for" statement

-Multiband Compressor
-Overdrive
-Vocoder
-Limiter
-Groove engine
-Track grouping

I'm not saying you're all amateurs, but when you choke down an update like this without thinking critically about what it is you're buying - and without comparing it to competing software in the same field - you sure do look like it.

And by the way, I absolutely love Ableton Live. But if FL Studio were anywhere near as useful as a live performance system, I would have to seriously reconsider the situation.

Dude, you've got brass balls coming here with that comedy material. You really think your dozen posts on the Ableton forum are going to sway the opinions of dedicated users? Sure, some of us drink the kool-aid, but for the most part, this community (both users and developers) does an amazing job of communicating and exchanging ideas in a constructive manner. Your whining is not constructive. If you don't like Ableton Live 8, sell it and use something else. Nobody is forcing you to upgrade. Maybe version 7 is fine for you. Great. Maybe Traktor or Serato better fit your needs.

I really got the impression that you don't know what you're talking about.

you're confused still, they get updates (bug fixes) not upgrades. so yes they do have to pay for their new features.

besides, if you want fruityloops buy fruityloops, if you want live buy live. if you pay the asking price then it is worth the asking price. I've dropped somewhere around $1000 on Live in the last few years and I don't regret a single penny of it cause I think it's a badass software. if it's not for you it's not for you.
