I actually just moved to Toronto a couple of weeks ago and have been having the hardest time getting work. I just graduated with a degree in accounting but the economy has cut out all the low end positions and all anyone wants is experience. I'm considering doing nude modeling for the art schools to pick up rent money.... seriously....

What band do you play in Aequitas? I am actually pretty pumped to be unemployed for this festival, love to check out your show.

I'm gonna check out The Field and Juan Maclean at Tattoo Bar tonight... Hope I can pay at the door and not have to buy a wrist band... What band are you in and where are you playing... Enjoying the rain?

Lots of us- I've been not so gainfully unemployed since November.

As others have said- freelance. I do enough consulting to make ends meet; I just don't have the spare cash I'm accustomed to.

+1 here...

I've got a degree etc... gonna post up on CL for freelance Graphic Design... I guess... but part of the reason I'm unemployed is I turned out to be a pretty mediocre designer. Would love to get a FedEx or UPS gig but they are hurting as well. Not the best time for a career change!

Seen some freelancers posting up in the 'Services' section.

You also totally throw yourself into music. Work 9-5 writing and recording building ups track and getting better at that.

...also try and do a club night playing records/CD/MP3's at a local bar that isn't "the spot" yet spinning something original and progressive(hopfully!). It may take some time but if you are doing something that other people aren't doing in your city the people who ARE fans of that style will find it...stay away from played out chit like 80's new wave/romantic and Goth nights stick to what YOU would want to hear that you aren't when you go out...

You might get free drinks to start but if you start bringing in people when you spin bars generally will give you a percentage of what they bring in. I'm NOT a DJ person but I spin records and can make $200 for 4 hours...not bad for a freelancer as well!

GOOD LUCK and carry on!

Freelance +1000

Got laid off in Feb from my producer job at a hot shot ad agency. I had seen it coming for months so I lived on a budget like I was already unemployed, bought missing gear for the studio and saved. Doomsday hit 6 months later and I had everything to hit the ground running.Since then I have got our record label banging with 8 new releases, signed 2 new artist, hired a intern, did 4 remixes that are coming out soon.

The label pays for its self now and hopefully will start turning a profit by end of summer, it helps me get DJing gigs for extra $$$.

I also have been doing freelance ad gigs here and there as well as some audio engineering.

Point is this... THERE IS A WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITY IF YOU TAKE THIS TIME TO WORK YOUR ASS OFF. You're on the ableton forum so I assume you make music. Go for it then... It's a fucking hustle and hard as hell but I'd rather be stuggling and doing what I want than sitting around feeling bad for myself. I don't understand how anyone on this board could be bored at home. You are musicians... make some music.

I have a very minimal lifestyle and that helps tons... basically my only expenses are rent, phone, heat, and food. My freelancing covers that and if I ever do not make it I have an unemployment claim open as a back up but so far I have not had to use hardly any of it.

Now get off this message board and start planning and acting.

Hugs and kisses,
Eric
