Vista Service Pack 2 = Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Windows 7 RC Build 7100 = Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7100]

Windows 7 is an evolutionary step from Vista and introduces significant changes to the kernel as well as almost every aspect of the OS. Just because the layout of the GUI is similar and a few select drivers "work" from Vista to Windows 7, doesn't mean they are identical. Its not Vista.

Can 7 be installed on the same drive as XP, just a different folder?

What's the advantage of a new partition vs new folder?

I'm running Windows 7 RC 64-bit now on a Q6600, with Live 7. Tried a few VSTs, it all works very well.

I shan't be going back to XP on this system any more, 7 is more fluid, seems more reliable, and there are tons of little improvements that I know I'd miss.

Adding a new partition will allow you to install windows 7 on that new partition without having to uninstall XP, so that you can check it out. Creating a partition just takes whatever free hard drive space is available (you can specify the amount to use) on your hard drive and esentially creates a new "section" that is seperate from your other partition where xp is installed. Its kinda like having two hard drives (or more if you have more partitions) on 1 hard drive.

Okay, thanks. I thought xp was possible on just different folder than win98, hence my question.

1. is there a good single site or forum on 64 bit compatibility?

I have q6600
Gigabyte GA G31M-SL2 mobo
audiophile 2496

do ALL computer components, like PCI or usb audiocard, modem have to be 64bit ready?

Is it a hw or just driver compatibility that's needed?

All your drivers (which are being used at least), for all your graphics, audio and MIDI devices, plus plugins.

Many recent plugins are already coded at 64 bit, such as Sonalksis's range of plugins - there are 'bit bridge' type converters for 48 or 32 bit plugins, which vary in their effectiveness.

Live 8 is 32 bit only, meaning performance will still be increased as you can still address around 4GB of RAM. But when it goes fully 64 bit compatible, assuming you have all the drivers and o/s to fully implement 64 bit, you can then access much more RAM (like 4x more and more beyond in some editions of w7.

I have checked the mobo, audiocard and Novation Nocturn. All positive.

The processor was not listed, but none was, so I assume, it will work fine.
