life's too short to not enjoy all the food you can.

eating meat is unhealthy? c'mon, you know better than that!

why do vegetarian threads also bring out conspiracies? generally veggies and conspiracists are too highly strung and need to lighten up.

I do avoid most pork though, it's a filthy animal. I also substitute turkey for red meat when it works in a dish.

The ethical folks will never outnumber the nihilists in a forum of DJs, so these threads will always be annoying.

Pop nihilism Vs ethical thought.

Why would you give up pleasure, ever?

If you have to ask...

besides, pork is the main meat consumed by Okinawans. Those buggers are centenarians. Of course they're not eating bacon and they are boiling out the fat, but it's still pork, or is it?

Wow, enjoy your first by-pass.

That is the new Okinawa diet.

The traditional diet:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okinawa_diet

"People from the islands of Ry?ky? (of which Okinawa is the largest) are reported to have the longest life expectancy in the world. This has in part been attributed to the local diet, but also to other variables such as genetic factors, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

Generally, the traditional diet of the islanders is 20% lower in calories than the Japanese average and contains 300% of the green/yellow vegetables (particularly heavy on sweet potatoes). The Okinawan diet is low in fat and has only 25% of the sugar and 75% of the grains of the average Japanese dietary intake.[2] The traditional diet also includes a relatively small amount of fish (less than half a serving per day) and somewhat more in the way of soy and other legumes (6% of total caloric intake). Almost no meat, eggs, or dairy products are consumed.[3]

An Okinawan reaching 110 years of age has typically had a diet consistently averaging no more than one calorie per gram and has a BMI of 20.4.[4]"

"After long ranking No. 1 in life expectancy in Japan, or near the top, Okinawa's men have plummeted in recent years to No. 26, a spot that has put them ignominiously in the bottom half of Japan's 47 administrative regions. Okinawa's women are still No. 1, but they too are almost certain to slip over the next decade, experts warn.

The fall has coincided, not surprisingly, with Okinawans' emergence as Japan's fattest people. Perhaps equally unsurprising is that waists have widened as Okinawans, ruled directly by the United States from the end of World War II to 1972, have, of all Japanese, most closely adopted the American lifestyle of cars, suburban malls and fast food.

The younger generation of Okinawans have rejected the traditional Okinawan diet, which among many other ingredients, consists of pork,---sorry to burst your bubble--- and have instead opted for a fast-food filled diet. So they are fat because they eat a western like diet. Research a bit deeper than a two paragraph wiki and you will find a more detailed description of their diet. Obviously they are not stuffing fistfuls of pork every hour, but they have been consuming it for centuries and have been quite healthy while doing so.

True , small amounts of certain items won't necessarily affect your overall health if you eat predominately good foods.

In much the world, meat was traditionally a flavoring amongst vegetables.

I can go days eating nothing but grilled as in bbq grilled veggies but I quite enjoy good steaks, good pulled pork sandwhiches, curried chichen etc etc. Too much of anything is a bad thing, including the smuggness that often occurs when you become a vegitarian.

got a source for that? in many countries pigs are setup below the latrines to eat whatever falls their way. a friend of mine grew up in Mexico like that. pigs are predisposed to eat feces. I'm not even going to get into a debate about which animal is treated worse.

Without insinuating anything in either direction of the subject, I always thought it was interesting that traditional Chinese medicine encourages a "modest" (2 oz 2-3 times a week) amount of meat consumption. On the theory that unless you're a monk only engaged in meditation, the body needs the animal protein to accommodate tissue growth and repair. There is also the African tribe who exist on primarily red meat and raw blood and dairy......
There are many different cultures on this diverse planet with many different dietary customs and all live to a ripe old age. The unifying secret to their vitality seems to be exercise and activity combined with calorie restriction, very moderate alcohol, and plenty of sleep..... :?

I live in northern CA and there is a high concentration "dietary awareness" many vegetarians and vegans......this is only a personal observation, but our vegan acquaintances (while great and kind people) seem to have the "least" tolerance, adaptability, and flexibility to handle stress, anything out of routine or that does not fit in to their reality.
It is most prevalent with the women over 30. I assume likely they are more focused on their philosophy of veganism rather than their biochemistry of veganism (getting a complete diet and nutrients)

Funny, I've been eating more raw foods, so when I see that sandwich and really want that purple cabbage or onion.

I think that it's worth noting that our tastes are somewhat formed at birth, then shaped strongly as infants.

After that, your taste can change further if you change your diet for long enough periods of time.

We will still crave basic flavor combinations (salty/fat/unami) which are embodied by (but not only) cooked meat, but learn to seriously appreciate other flavors as well.
