I saw it last night having heard nothing but rave reviews and came out hugely disappointed. You may want to curb your enthusiasm to prevent similar disappointment.

To be honest I'd prefer Independence Day anyday. Moon is a far less hyped and far more enjoyable option IMO. Soundtracked by Clint Mansell and featuring Kevin Spacey as benevolent supercomputer.

Would you prefer Independance day because your a fan of that film or because this film was worse than Will Smith manhandling an alien out of a space craft and socking him repeatedly (not hating on Smith, I really liked him in I am Legend)

I'm not a huge Independence Day fan but that was definitely one of the standout scenes, along with the destruction of the alien mothership using Windows 95.

Neither film was particularly outstanding, but I remember Independence day being LESS ridiculous (despite aforementioned mishaps) and more consistently entertaining. I think the fact that D9 was so overhyped in my mind has made me a little resentful.

Starship Troopers owns them both, hands down.

You just made my mind up. I won't be going to see it and I'll wait for the torrent DVD rip.

Anything where ID4 can in anyway be said to be better is not something I have any need to see in a hurry.

ok, i've got the new luke vibert loaded onto the mp3 device for the 70 minute drive, and the brownies i made are in full effect. we're rained out at work, and i'm gonna have fun at this damn movie, even if i have to get arrested. my dork contacts say it's cool, and there just isn't any such thing as too much sci fi.
edit: wow, that trailer for moon looks fantastic! someone besides me, please start a thread.

Yeah i think I might be resenting you for raining on my expectations parade lol. Starship troopers is great; favorite part = Girl dies in heros arms saying "It was worth it because I got to have you" Don't have the nerve to risk 2 and 3 thou

I dunno fellas, having not seen d9 yet i can say that it simply is not in the same movie species as independence day, troopers, transformers etc, all being pointed at the 12 to 40 demo.

30 year old Alien destroys all those films which probably is more closely related to d9, both pointed at a narrower and older demo.

anyway, i'm gonna lower my hype a bunch and see it this weekend, but it seems to be a much smarter movie than the others mentioned.

i hope :|

Haven't seen it yet either, but honestly I can't see it as having less of a plot than Independence Day or Starship Troopers. Starship Troopers was good, but Robocop was that guys best work IMO. <-- more of a social commentary in Robocop. I don't have to agree with the 'message' of a movie to think a message makes it a better movie, example would be Henry V, (Kenneth Branagh version), England acts like an aggressive tool IMO and wins etc. but the reasons for the aggression and the reasons Henry is willing to go there are clear. I think some people get turned off to movies where the 'politics' of it don't match their own. That's not my thing at all, I would rather see a great movie making Stalin into a likable character than a bad movie painting him out to be the paranoid genocidal maniac that he was.

^^^ Not trying to read into anybodies bad review of the movie, I could easily agree that it's a bad movie, just saying the plot might rub some the wrong way.

Can't wait for District 9... I am going to the 10:00 show tonight at possibly the worst movie theater known to man (Oneonta, NY) but still, I am brimming with excitement (and next week is the basterds).

Am I the only one here so dumb that I saw Starship Troopers probably 4 or 5 times before I realized it was all satire and a social commentary on fascism? Bugs were the GOOD guys!

Yeah I'm kinda there with that. I always saw the troopers as jocks. The wanker football shit-head ones from high-school.

That kind of film recruits little soldiers for our wars.

ala Gi Shmoe of this new recruitment cycle.

I'm excited for this one, too. I thought the sound design in the trailer was absolutely superb!
