By the way, does it at least remember the state of the lights if you switch to another "program" and then go back, unlike the nanoKontrol which forgets them once you switch to another "scene"?
Remembering the state of it's own lights at least doesn't have anything to do with being able to receive midi.

Did you ever try and see if the state of the lights are remembered when you switch scenes?

PadKONTROL running farmpad will remember state of lights when switching scenes.

-Anyone know how to make a midi template so that the nanokontrol will always control the same parameters by default when starting a new project? (Right now I have to do it from scratch each time)

Just map the undo keystroke with a midi translator. Bomes, midistroke, or QuicKeys

If you haven't checked out the nanoKontrol Myr midi remote script already mentioned in this thread, you're seriously missing out.

Undo is great and all but if you are using it to delete clips it isn't ideal.

Say you're recording a loop, while twisting a knob.. You mess up on the loop, you hit undo, what do you know, it undoes the knob twist, then hit it again and you'll undo your clip.. Not very fun..

I finally got an LPD8 and set one of the pads on "program 4" to toggle and the state of the light isn't remembered if you switch to another program and go back just like on the nanoKontrol.
It's funny that it doesn't remember considering if you press the Program button the light for the currently active program lights up which means that it has some kind of internal memory.

So far it looks like the AKAI professional products are more solid than the Korg stuff which is kind of cheap feeling.

I've found with most audio/midi gear that it's like "it has this, this, that, this, that and this"..

and you assume that it'll do the simplest things, but no, it doesn't have that.

So I may be getting another nano just to TRULY HAVE 2 SCENES.

I have been having some terrible thoughts about my nano...

I've been wanting to build my own live controller for some time. The korg is okay (i only use one scene because of the issues discussed herein; it's mapped well and it performs great) but it's awful cheap-feeling, it's actually a little too small, sometimes the buttons stick, etc. So i was wondering about cannibalizing it and using it as a brain; taking out the PCB and ripping off all the faders and shit, and soldering on leads for some beefier hardware, then just mounting it inside whatever box I fabricate. This has some advantages over the Doepfer kit for a few reasons, not the least of which being that the editor is a)awesome and b)available for mac and also that a nanokontrol costs about fifty bucks. It's probably a real stupid idea, for reasons that will (i'm sure) become apparent as soon as I've totally fucked it up, but I'm gonna dive in and see how it goes. I have no idea if the PCB is build sturdily enough to even consider doing this stuff, but worst-case I wind up minus one controller and GC gets another visit from me. Woo ha.

I think is would be very interesting to modify a nanoKontrol. You should be able to remove the knobs/sliders and top from it and just keep everything else contained in to bottom part.

I know, there's always something that would make it more useful.

The one thing that would make the AKAI LPD8 better (other than aftertouch) is transpose up and down buttons that could be set to different amounts for each "program". Why can't they just call programs scenes or banks like everyone else?

I'd love to have these buttons set to +8 and -8 for programs # 1,2 and 3 and +12 and -12 for #4, for example.

At the moment I have #1, #2 and #3 set to C1 to B2 so that covers 2 octaves WITH the black keys over 3 "programs" which usually is enough for many drum racks.
Program #4 is set to C2 to C3 WITHOUT black keys so it's a full octave which isn't great for most drum racks and Battery etc. because it skips the sounds mapped to the black keys but it's much better for non-percussion instruments because it's a full octave.
