all i'm saying is you aren't accomplishing anything by complaining to forumites

but i understand your frustration completely

and yes computer performing even at its most reliable is still not as reliable as hardware and cdjs

give it time, im sure the next live update will (hopefully) cover many of your issues

dont worry though when i couldnt get live 8 to work properly i was just as mad as you are, they shouldnt have the public do the beta testing, thats their job. theres no excuse for that really.

it's cool hurlingdervish, I've been waiting a long time for a reliable computer setup, I'm such an advocate and I cant go back to hardware now... but like u said, I'm realising that even under the best possible circumstances, you're basically crossing your fingers... I have had many successful ableton gigs, but if I push it at all it's too risky and I always have problems during soundcheck... and I dont think computer music will ever completely replace hardware until the reliability is top notch, not just for crashes and such but also things like midi control.. I've always thought it was a terrible idea letting people choose their own latency, and the different timings of pc/soundcard combinations, it means you can never master the "feel" of it as instrument, you cant develop muscle memory for it because the variables are constantly changing... an apc on one computer doesnt really "feel" the same as another because the computers are responding at ever so slightly different rates... ITS DRIVING ME MAD!!! I want to get on with it but there's always something that puts up a roadblock.... ever feel like you cant try hard enough :)

Thanks for your support... like I said I'm not mad, just sad and I'm really rooting for Ableton with this 8.05 update, but please dont put out version 9 unfinished, it's not cool... cuz all I did wrong was believing Ableton who said it was finished by releasing the thing.... I beta tested it too, every version, it was better back then.

my mpc2000xl crashed on stage for me twice.

that's twice more than ableton has.

.lm.

edit: actually, that's not true. my mpc2000 crashed on stage once and the mpc2000xl crashed on stage once.

if you're a developer you should know better.
wtf !?
sdfak1234 You have my sympathies..

I have also found that Ableton seems to be slightly less stable than previous versions.. but crashing 5 times in a row is darned unlucky.

I've had a stall on an MPC but that was my fault.. geez mine went everywhere and did everything and still works fine with no crashes... but then again, it cant do shit any more because we're much more high tech.... that's the thing, I don't want to go back, I want ableton and apc to be PERFECT, it's so close I can taste it, I don't even need any more features now, I just need reliability + a really powerful portable rig...

My studio I7 machine is so powerful it's insane, I'm fully aware that the more complex something is the more chance there is of something going wrong... but once something reaches that level of complexity (where it's too hard too manage), you're supposed to restructure your codebase to deal with all the taped on functionality in a more manageable less bug filled way... to be fair though I have read Ableton mention a rewrite a few times, so I expect that is in fact in the works... Steinberg should have done that years ago, you can tell they still use their original codebase just modified to insanity.

Speaking of which, I think Ableton, NI, and Cycling 74 should team up and write a new plugin standard because VST is really causing serious development restrictions... and their standard is obviously completely unstable... plugins should be completely unable to crash a host, and software should have complete control of their own memory management in order to eliminate crashing.

Yeah, it was shit hot for about 6 mins too!, people were going mental... but then it turned into the biggest anti climax, biggest disaster ever... I look at it positively though, I got through my worst nightmare without a nervous breakdown... I doubt I could ever have a gig go as wrong as that ever again :) :) .. but it was the final straw, ya know?

yeah there is nothing more frustrating than spending hours on a project and it all going tits up at the critical show and tell moment..
all i can say is that the more proactive you (we) are at reporting accurately problems being experienced, the more likely they will eventually be resolved.. little solace i know.

I understand what you were saying Tone Deft, I just don't happen to agree with your assessment of the situation

OK cool. you asked me a very direct question, ya know? "what the fuck" not words you'd use in polite conversation.

getting bit by software is par for the course. he's a professional with software on stage and in his personal life.

can the thread title be changed from "quick message" to something else. ;)

leisuremuffin wrote:still no repeatable crashes here. very few crashes in the studio. *None* onstage or practicing with my onstage set up. I keep it very simple for onstage. no 3rd party plugs (well, that's not entirely true, i use a couple psp plugs in my stage setup), 8 tracks max, 16bit 44.1. In the studio i go 24bit 88.2 and use lots of 3rd party plugs and as many tracks and plugs as my cpu can handle. have had a hand full of crashes in that situation, but not enough that i have anything to complain about and have never lost anything i was working on.

works as advertised for me.
I must be lucky.

I keep seeing all these threads about what utter garbage Live 8 is, and I've been sitting here, at my computer, using Live 8 from about 11 AM until some time between 11 PM and 3 AM, 7 days a week, for the last 10 weeks, and I can't recall getting any crashes at all. There may have been one or two, but as LM said, certainly nothing that caused a melt down for me. And when I'm writing, I use every plug-in under the sun (slight exaggeration, perhaps 100 3rd party plugs), including all of Native's stuff. It's got to be system/hardware related for people.
