Please Help:Headphones for Mixing and Mastering+Monitoring ?
Re: Please Help:Headphones for Mixing and Mastering+Monitoring ?
headphones (any!) for serious monitoring are a joke in itself.
headphones in an audio environment are for tracking, pre-listening (also referred as monitoring!), listening with iPods, etc., etc.
but not for monitoring if used in the context of mixing/mastering.
but whatever.
man that is so funny, people arguing here on this board about sound quality of samplitude (or whatever else) vs. live
but at the same time they want to use a pair of shit cans for mixing/mastering.
and some wonder software that turns there cans into a room with genies or PMC.
i piss myself with laughter.

Nothing wrong with using headphones to mix with...so long as you -
1. use a good, flat-sounding pair
2. know what to listen for
3. check them against some decent monitors - at low volume - as you go
And if you don't have a good sounding acoustic room, as most folk don't, I'd trust the 'phones over whatever nasty colouration your monitor set-up might be giving you.
As for mastering? forget it. It can't be done on headphones to any professional level.

Perhaps you should see a doctor about that.SubFunk wrote: i piss myself with laughter.

Re: Please Help:Headphones for Mixing and Mastering+Monitoring ?
headphones are very useful in mixing, good at spotting phase issues, ticks n pops. If the mix sounds relatively identical to speakers, it'll prolly rock most enviroments imho. My best work wasn't done that way so it really isn't that important either.
Re: Please Help:Headphones for Mixing and Mastering+Monitoring ?
well, i contributed, probably in your eye nothing positive... you most probably look more for me saying:twisted-space wrote:Perhaps you should see a doctor about that.SubFunk wrote: i piss myself with laughter.

yeah great guys use headphones for mixing and mastering, it's a good choice here is a list of all the good models to use... did you?
sorry to disappoint you.
so where is the problem?
i stick to my guns. headphones should be banned once and forever in the mixing / mastering process.
for anything else they are of very good use.
but hey i see that i get again involved into pointless time waisting conversations. i have not visited this forum for a while, i was to busy...
but i realise it was a bliss not to be able to... and i will leave it.
and i know you don't get it, many of you don't get it. but honestly isn't it a great joke, people discussing in another thread on here the sound quality
of live vs. 'whatever' like it would be a battle of live and blood and here in this thread claiming a pair of cans is a good thing to use for mixing/mastering, because of the mediocre monitoring setups they have...
i am sorry if that does not tell pretty much all about this forum.
cans are valid to have, but they do NOT replace a room with monitors, not even the worst coloured cheap shit monitor / room setup on this planet.
period.
if you think different, use 'em.
also period.
i laugh.

Re: Please Help:Headphones for Mixing and Mastering+Monitoring ?
It all depends on who you live with (Environment) I even drive myself mad by listening to the same loop over and over for a few hours at a time, so i would hate to think how long others in the house would feel if i subjected them to that torture. Monitors are not an option for me, My KRKs are still in storage and i plan for them to stay there until i get my own pad.
So still loving my AKG K701 (Don't knock um until you've tested um)

that is valid, it is a good use of cans to use them for writing, construction, arrangement and whatever else....the girl next door wrote:It all depends on who you live with (Environment) I even drive myself mad by listening to the same loop over and over for a few hours at a time, so i would hate to think how long others in the house would feel if i subjected them to that torture. but not for the final mixing/mastering process.
you guys always mix things/terms up.
sitting there with your cans all night long and twiddling around on a track is not mixing/mastering
for that very own process cans should be banned.
again period.

I think i speak for everyone on this Forum when i say a roof over your head is more important than trying to be the next calvin harris.
Re: Please Help:Headphones for Mixing and Mastering+Monitoring ?
I think there is just misunderstanding what you are talking about and what others mean (which is not "real" mixing/mastering)SubFunk wrote:that is valid, it is a good use of cans to use them for writing, construction, arrangement and whatever else....the girl next door wrote:It all depends on who you live with (Environment) I even drive myself mad by listening to the same loop over and over for a few hours at a time, so i would hate to think how long others in the house would feel if i subjected them to that torture. 701 or Sennhs 600 can serve better then great monitors in untreated room. Then there are mobile situations where there is no choice. I know some serious composers/musicians who mostly work with headphones but they know their setup = headphones very well and know how to correct the stuff blindly. This is tricky thing anyway, I also know my stuff using same cans for long years still get surprised/shocked sometimes when I run the mix on the monitors ( it would be insane to not exam the material before delivering anywhere), despite knowing my equipment, though it may be OK most of the time there will be some "jumping out" frequencies, sounds etc.
What SubFunk tries to do is just warn a bit less experienced aspiring producers. Working with headphones may work for John McLaughlin because he has 50 years of experience but till anyone gets to that level, better be reasonable and "listen to elders" (though I have no clue how old Sub really is)

Nobody in this thread has has said that headphones should be used to master a recording, in fact quite a number of people have said the the opposite. If you had actually read the whole thing you would have seen that yourself.SubFunk wrote: and i know you don't get it, many of you don't get it. but honestly isn't it a great joke, people discussing in another thread on here the sound quality

@ rikhyray
you are close to what i think.
it's not about the age, it is about, even if some known people around do that, that it is not a good idea to use cans for the actual process of mixing your product to the final stages... mastering is a 100% no go...
only because some techniques started to make there way into the audio realm, i dare to highly disagree with them.
and i do strongly believe (and have seen it!) that it is way better to learn the same 'adaption" techniques, e.g. doing corrections based on experience instead of what you can actually hear on your own system, by playing it back on different systems and gain experience that way, and work with rather a super mediocre monitor setup at home in a coloured like hell room, then with a pair of cans...
that cans are great and i believe all of us using them for on the road, late night at home, etc., etc. is totally OK, just don't use em' for the actual mix process.
the reason i say this, if you learn on shit speakers in shit rooms, you are going to have it way, way easier and much faster to adapt your learned working processes to a great monitoring setup in a perfect environment, if you learn to mix on a pair of cans, you start from zero mixing good on a perfect monitoring setup. it's your choice. (you will remember my words when you are coming into this described situation, i sure.)
this is my initial point!
but hey, i really should leave it. do as you please!

? cans for mixing/mastering (that was the OPs question)
? bann cans for mixing/mastering
my choice is clear:
i am an idiot who says it's a bad idea to use cans for the OPs asked question.
