I am going back to turntables!

I agree re: the crowds' intelligence has nothing to do with it.

Ok.
You are not a DJ unless you can mix records, read grooves, pick the next song, fuck over other djs...or.... be able to nod lots and wave your arms a bit.

You are not a DJ unless
you can mix records,
read grooves,
pick the next song,
fuck over other djs
be able to nod lots and wave your arms a bit.

And not actually play an instrument
you can mix records,
read grooves,
pick the next song,
fuck over other djs
be able to nod lots and wave your arms a bit.

That last bit is key... otherwise you're a musician not a DJ.
Re: I am going back to turntables!
It's all bollocks nowadays, Peter Hook makes a fortune from DJing and just presses play on MixMag CDs pointlessly, although admittedly energetically, twiddling a rotary.
Modern DJing has nothing to do with mixing music, it's all about the wankery.
back in the day we used to go to clubs, 90% of the time you didn't even know where the DJ was , let alone who he was.
Now there up in a special box and the corwd all turn and face them.
Sad.

but wether digital or analog, you are not a dj if you can`t beat match those ol 60s n 70s obscure 7" records in a minute. You definetly got the wrong job if you need to stare and twist for 6 minutes on the Technics just to beat match a 4/4 mnml techno tune that runs out of sync ten secs after you started the second vinyl. For those thinking about warping those obscure tape machine tunes - it kills the groove, so that ain`t a way to go and heads in it, will realize that
But just my two cents...most people calling themselves a dj suck, only a few make a living out of it and they deserve the title. All you wannabes djing just for the drinks ruining the prices are a pita.

Re: I am going back to turntables!
I only look at the DJ when the music and/or the ambiance are a bit boring. (what else to do?) you know, eyes stuck on the spinning black wheel, or on the hands of the DJs (like if it was something astonishing to turn eqs)
You hence know if it's a "good" DJ when you see all people in the crowd closing their eyes while dancing or smiling and looking at each other, never mind i'ts vinyle or gear.
well, my 100% useless post

Ahem. When I were a lad we used to go to clubs...well, I say clubs - they were more like synchronous ( yet improvised ) gatherings of kindred souls...and more than 150% of the time, not only did you not know who the DJ was..he wasn't even there (in a very real but completely ineffable sense).
His genius was such that he could tune into the groove from a secret and remote location (using something a LOT like that recent Norwegian thing) and keep it totally in the pocket, WHILST simultaneously controlling an industrial disc-cutting lathe with one hand and stirring a fresh vat of molten vinyl with the other...ALL WITH HIS FUCKING MIND!
And you try and tell the kids of today that. And they won't believe you.
