Re: damn you ableton.
Coming from Logic I find the Ableton sequencer window a bit annoying - and maybe it stems from not being able to assign key commands to any function - a forte of Logic.
Switching into draw mode should be a one key affair.
Quantize by current grid size is nice, but Live won't zoom out to larger subdivisions if a clip is small. So I can't quantize to 1/4 notes automagically.
Constantly adjusting the size of the roll window is a bit of a hassle as well.
But it isn't the piano roll that excites me in Live...

i agree, but this one is possible... Switching into draw mode should be a one key affair. just map manually any key (i use Q) to the pen symbol next to the transport pane, done.sgreene wrote:Coming from Logic I find the Ableton sequencer window a bit annoying - and maybe it stems from not being able to assign key commands to any function - a forte of Logic.

^Yet another gratifying moment in Ableton learning history
The DAW must be attacked. Push every button & open every friggin window until it has nothing else left to hide. When I first got Ableton, I made it feel like a teenage girls first trip to a gynecologist - I probed it in every which damn direction

Re: damn you ableton.
Coming from linear arrangement sequencers, I fought against using Live's session mode. Then one day, after I had a good basic arrangement going in arrangement mode, I chopped everything into blocks and pasted them into session mode. Then I discovered the ability to pick various clips in session mode then "copy and insert scene." There is just no turning back for me now. I love the workflow in Live, and I understand why devices like the APC40 are so huge ATM.
Now all I want is a huge monitor so I can put as many clips onscreen as I can. Working on he 13" macbook has that limitation. But maybe some limitation is a good thing.

Though I don't get why the 3GHz one is cheaper than the 2.7GHz or whatever it was.

Glad you like! Unfortunately, thats the original image size I found on the net. If anyone has the DVD and can send me a frame-grab I'll happily make one.davepermen wrote:big one, we want wallpapersPitch Black wrote:

Though I'm not really one for internet memes, or whatever the fuck they're called...
...but this thread is full of WIN.
Necho's size joke, Planet of the Abes, and the Robert/Unix photo, to name but a few.

you also have to constantly adjust the window szise in live.. even when the 2dim zoom tool is great for that, it dont helps with the minimal window space we have for the editor..
there is a one key drawing comand in logic when you select that in the secondary toolbox ...
Quantize in logic leads in general to better results because a more refined algorythms.
You can split recorded tracks into multiple midi channels per voice... one of the biggest advantages in logic..
Allmost latency free midi thru is great for people that like to play the keyboard.
Actualy the ableton editor got closer to the standard.. not so many functions are still missing..
Ways to deal with double and overlap..
Intelligent quantize algorythm ,
Split into different voice/midi channels
might be the main issues...
The intelligenz of logics quantize is quite simple but effektiv...
it looks if all notes are late or early and shifts all in the necessary direction before applying the quantize to 16th for example..
this way the quantized line represents better what the musican had in mind than the semi random quantize in ableton..
but of cause you can do a select all.. move the whole selection to an one..maybe stertch the thig that another one is met 16 bars later and do the quantize to 16th than...
gives similar results but much more moves.. place for further optimisations

Re: damn you ableton.
After necho put me on to Live about 2 years ago now, I've been in love with it every since...
...it does have some short comings though... Some more useful keystrokes would be good, being able to nudge clips/audio would be fucking awesome and better automation and few other bits, but I'm confident this will all come in the future...
Live is such a hybrid of uses for many different people, no one seems to quite use it in the same way, and I think this is why I love it the most. I'm always learning something new every week and that what makes (at the very least) great entertainment value, let alone a productive one.
With pros even starting to use this proggy as a sound design tool, as film composition tool and now with stuff like Max For Live for the serious tech heads etc. etc. I think they're taking all of this into account and Live 9 will seriously kick some arse. I hope they stay true to their word and iron out all the bugs so it's proper stable (though since 8.1.1 it's stable as fuck for me) and even make it a little more efficient - then they'll truly have a great platform to build on. Now with the Launchpad, I'm making great use of the Session view, which I never did before... It all makes sense to me now.
Any shortcomings Live does have - the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages I reckon. Worth every penny.
