I am a software test engineer working for Cambridge Silicon Radio, I test wireless audio applications, as an example, a bluetooth headset.

like your self, things were not doing great in my neck of the woods.....
I made a career change, and am in nursing school. I always liked health care (and public service) for the ability to work hard, and then take time off....

Freelance I.T. contractor/consultant/engineer/administrator. I specialise in supporting small business, i.e. networks upto ~150 users.
And yeah, the current financial climate is causing me problems, I've lost 3 of my main clients to the recession in the last 12 months.

well, i think it's generally bad, in my trade as well... have a friend who called me last summer... with the best joke ever...In my trade, I've never seen times this bad, and I've been doing this for almost 20 years.
there was a tour in germany of one of our most popular stars in the music business right now, don't want to mention the name (discretion), but a serious german superstar. his FOH guy got ill during the tour, they looked for someone for replacement for one single show (an even more hardcore job to jump one night into a show tour, then doing and knowing the whole show) they offered him 150 euros (seriously experienced guy, of course for that job you need someone with a good measure of experience and skills) for the night, i nearly fell of my chair for laughter... this business is screwed, because the bottom line is that this is common money offered/paid our days, a joke a total and utter joke! you can simply not live from that, even if you are super busy (not as a freelancer, paying your taxes and transport, etc. from it) a job like this pays(ed) a few hundred per night!
prices are dumped to an extend that is not funny anymore.

Tech supportting for couple of art museums.. _very_ boring job but in a lovely enviroment. I get 100% of my income from the job and -20% from the music

i pimp and push lately a lot of superior mp3s and get pay cheques from Fraunhofer.
