and listen closely to every part you create even if it sounds nothing like the sound you try to replicate. some of those get dragdropped into my private folder, as they sound great on their own (or strange, or both). they might get useful one day, even if just for browsing and letting one inspire.

By knowing that certain types of sounds are better not made with a synth.

The SOS synth tips are great.
If you can find this book, it's a great resource in analog synthesis.
Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls by Allen Strange.

However, demand's brought it's price up to the point of ridiculousness.

Creating your own synths in something like Max/MSP or Reaktor can help you understand what's going on in the signal path too.
