Maschine or turntables again?

i really have not much money right now, but i think i will rob someone and get it next week, or go on diet and live on beans n' toast for a month or something... i need to have that damn thing.

i think the last time i was so horny about gear, was years ago when i first listened to genelec 1032s in a studio and was like: i need too have some now!
well, not long after i had some. (the first pair including sub, got stolen, though... )

I know I've been outspoken on here about not seeing the big deal about vinyl but I do see the attraction for the tactile reason if nothing else. But when I see all the videos showing what you can do with Traktor and controllers there are far more things that can keep you busy and entertained that I think far outweigh the satisfaction of beat matching two songs manually.

well the videos are lame, wait until you actually played around with it, i just spend about 30-40 minutes with it and was instantly hooked like from a needle, damn.

i really could not imagine heaving gear lust again, i have all i want and need since years unaltered and actually reduced and reduced to the very better, but this damn thing... well i need to rob someone fast, maybe on the weekend, some drunk around or something...

after a bit over 15 years of vinyl mixing and collecting, that 100% accounts for me, the first time after having T3 i had real fun again after the last years of vinyl where i felt, it's time for something more exciting after all those years playing out.

well, that decision no one can take off you... only because i fell in love with it does not mean everybody else has to, but it serves my needs perfectly, it serves as a controller and pad 'player' i mostly use anyway (the PadK) for all my apps i use, live and logic and as a dj controller for traktor and as an awesome instrument anyway, it has a fairly small footprint, is light for what it is, built like german stuff is supposed to be built, it makes you turn away from the laptop screen and the ultimate most important issue for me! it is USB powered!!!

i honestly would not get it or anything else for that matter anymore regarding a sound card or a controller that needs a PSU.

that is such a 100% no go!

so i have my perfect mini studio / travel arrangement with it.

^^^ it's hardware.

With software you can demo it before committing to a life-long license.

Also, hardware 'wears' and it's nice to have the option to sell the old unit for a reasonable price if you want to replace it down the road.

That and when the Maschine II comes out, he'll be stuck with Maschine I. Edu licenses don't usually prevent you from upgrading, 96% of the time.




Although, since he's in new york... he should be able to check out the device before buying...
but still, Maschine II rules me out of buying an edu version of this hardware despite being entitled to such a discount.

Alot, ALOT - A LOT, of people can't demo hardware before buying it - resale value is essential.
As I said, aqua's in a better position than most because he's living in a thriving metropolis and he should be able to check the hardware out.

Even still, alot of flaws never become apparent until you've used something for a while.

Valid point and justification. If being able to resell something is a major deciding factor, then ya, pay for the full version. Is that extra $100 really going to make you homeless?

But I really don't think this is a "power to the consumer!" issue. There's more than 1 person on here that buys and resells gear like it's their day job, sometimes rebuying something they already sold. It's a self control and short attention span issue, like it's a sprinting race between finding value in something quickly and paying the bills.

It's not so much a defeatist attitude, more of a practical thing. IMO, it's more practical to have things that you can resell either because you may come to realize after some use that, even though it's great and fun and has stellar reviews, you may not need it at the moment and your money may be better spent on other, more essential things.

MPC's are loved and celebrated the world over, and anyone would love to have one around. I've had two (1000 and 2500), enjoyed using them, and if I had endless supplies of money and space, I'd still have them around. But I didn't NEED them at the moment, and extra space + extra money for other expenses sounded good, so I sold them.

I've had two different DJ setups in the past 3 years (a CDJ setup and a turntable setup). They were awesome. Loved having them in my room to practice for my gigs, sample stuff, etc etc etc. I enjoyed them for some time, but then came the moment where I couldn't justify keeping them around, and once again extra space + extra money were priority number one. So I sold them.

Notice a pattern there?

I'm not saying that the same thing is definitely going to happen with Maschine if I got it. But who's to say it couldn't happen? A time might come when I need... or not even need, just want... the extra money and desk space and start seeing Maschine (hypothetically) as one of the non-essentials (despite its coolness) that can be sacrificed for the greater good. And just with that possibility in mind, I think I'd rather have the version that I CAN get rid of.

X= the price of the edu version
Y= the amount of money you project you might lose if you sold the 'regular' maschine

if Y is less than X, then there's no real dilemma.


especially if you are in the habit of buying-ABC/selling-ABC/thinking.about.rebuying-ABC
