Its still WAY cool, but it won't change anything in the situation on my DAW. I only use it for music. I use my other desktop or my laptop for everything else. I might give it a go on my other desktop, just to have a look. Seems really easy... thanks for the suggestion.

Ableton Live 7 and 8 install and run quite well under wine actually.
There are just two problems:
1. No function that requires live to create a wav file (such as bouncing a track) work.
2. It is quite difficult to get good low latency performance with programs running in wine. I'm looking into this though, and I have good hopes that I might get something to work.
As for windows xp: it's far from obsolete. I run it on all my music production machines, I see no reason to change to something newer.
