Since when has hating been the past-time of the truly talented? I'm just not a happy person. Let's not get confused here.

Even w/o M4L or Max- with just automation, clip envelopes, follow actions, sub groups/bussing, midi controller assignments/blue hand- it's Ableton; a lot can happen when 1button is pushed. Also gotta remember these guys have to do it every night, travel light, no mistakes with as little gear & setup time as humanly possible- so they're going to streamline their set.
Still like to hear some knob twisting though.

Touche, sir...you make a valid point, but perhaps you can enlighten us as to what you do (or what you'd like to see) to qualify a performance as being worthy?

I'm totally serious, btw, I'd really like some feedback, on a general level of course but also so that I can consider maybe incorporating some new ideas into what I do as well.

I personally think people just want to see a connectivity with what the person is doing and what is happening. For the less technical minded, that could be as easy as jumping around like a madman or elaborately messing with the effects. For those with a basic clue on whats going on, they want to see knobs turned and buttons pushed that actually do something. They also want the feel that the performer is actually in control of the music.

From what ive seen Flying Lotus has a pretty basic setup but really gets into what hes doing. Im guessing that his live set, and general workflow, is pretty basic...hence why he doesn't like to talk about it much.

Personally its a little less than I prefer from the live performance perspective. I love the dj mix -> live set hybrid method (it has a good vibe) but I see a lot of people getting lazy with it. The meat of the set has to have a distinct manual aspect to it beyond just playing with stuff imo.

One the best features Ableton has implemented was "the lounge" it's nice to not have to downshift out of music making mode to process as many hater posts. Occasionally these still creep up here though.
Not being sycophantic about Flying Lotus, but in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKqV_tYlHao it looks like he's twisting a few knobs with a big grin on his face having a great time. Isn't that what making and playing music should be about?

These two are playing locally for the first time this weekend at a fairly small club in town. My gf doesn't want to go though so I think I'm SOL. I'm bummed.

not necessarily, really all of the points in this thread are valid, with any other performance artform people rate performance, it's only music that some don't and those are usually musicians but everything counts. when you see people lip sync it's annoying when you see guitar wankery it's annoying and when you see someone push a button and twist a knob that do nothing it's annoying. I think Donnie hits the point on target, people want to see the music under control of the artist and if the artist happens to lose control they want to share that honest moment with the artist as well. Computer musicians/artist should not should not feel like they are above the rest of the artworld when it comes to performance they should place even more emphasis on it because everybody already knows what a computer is and people know it's primary functions is to do things humans cannot, society as a whole does not like the thought of it's art being controlled by machines because art is inherently human so if you use a maschine they want to see you controlling it and not the other way around.

Yes, all point are valid, but this applies to 5percent of the chin scratchers sitting in the corner talking about how they can do better. Well then, do it! Nothing is stopping you from expanding on the paradigm except yourself. Most of these threads are just creative avoidance anyway
Yea, wankery on both sides, but a lot comes from people sitting in the audience gawking in a "dance" environment. It's music at the end of the day, it's emotion, it's supposed to be a release not some sterile exercise in observational powers. Who gives a shit if people are moving.

Absolutely.

We can't let over analysis kill the fun.

All those guys used trigger fingers. edIT from the glitch mob sold his mpd a while back because he liked his trigger finger's pads more. They only recently switched to lemurs. I actually bought a nocturn off edIT and he said he didn't really use it because he prefers to do his automation by mouse, one pass at a time.

You have to understand, audiences really can't handle shit that's too complicated. We can, as fans and musicians, that's what we want, but the people dancing on the floor really can't handle all that. Compare the audience at a glitch mob show to a mono/poly show and you'll see the difference. Check out glitch mob's crush mode, there's quite a bit of knob twisting, but not so much that it would interrupt dancing. Also, there's 4 dudes in the glitch mob, they have to stay in sync live so they really can't just launch in a million different directions.

Also, flying lotus has pics of his studio on his myspace. I'm sure it's evolved since then, but you can see his all his gear up to just before he did Los Angeles. Last I saw he still used a trigger finger as well.

if you scroll down to March 27th here you can see a quick glance over my Ableton Live setup from a soundcheck.

The very 1st time i performed my stuff live I personally felt like I was lacking as a performer. I took the same songs and added some exciting synth parts and started incorporating the KAOSS pad and it brought new life out. I also felt better about controllerism while keeping my hands busy.
