That should solve some desires for GUI.
It would be nice to pick fonts or have a some thing released by Ableton that let you choose color schemes as easily as assigning midi.
HOWEVER my vote is to leave the GUI relatively unchanged. It's one of the best parts about the program. I think it looks great and will continue to hold it's own for years to come.

Graphic art students?
So what would the competition or option to that be, Graphic Art professionals, or someone who has no graphic art experience?
Such a perplexing statement, yet a validation to most of the ugly software out there that was probably done by whomever is not a graphic artist.
Hey Ableton hire someone who knows nothing about graphic design and revamp your GUI into something lame.

the general gui is awesome.....
however, the gui for analog is a right mess. stops me from using it. that needs a clean. to small. to cluttered.

Piano roll could use more obvious divisions for bars and beats. At the moment it's hard to see at a glance where the notes are, especially if you keep changing the grid size.
Also the option to show both session and arrangment view together, clip and effects view together, or 2 clip views together.
DJs have been asking for ages to be able to see 2 audio clips at once. But I'd like to see 2 piano rolls together, or be able to mess with clip envelopes at the same time as adjusting the overall value of am effect parameter.
The overall style is fine though.

Re: not a very important thing: a nicer looking GUI
I just did a project of a complete song in arranger view (bevore that I used live only for live performances) and
I reallised that I would have liked to have the possiblillity to see the mixer part under the sequencer part!

i could not disagree more with the initial post. the gui is superb.
a person can find problems in anything if that is what they are looking for.

Re: not a very important thing: a nicer looking GUI
ok but you got plenty of good skins for Live
I use mindFusion>>> dark background and white typos, love it!
Personaly I agree on the fact that gui is good and even ubber good in its actual state,
nothing could distract you from the essential, Composing music

i got a whole new appreciation for Live's color schemes after seeing those skins (thanks for the link though!)
will investigate further...
i'd love to have a "color selected" (or something) option though which should color all clips "along the color circle"
the built-in auto-coloring really makes everything look garrish...
edit: Is it possible to reduce the number of colors available in the drop down menu (or at least change them)?

nope, these color schmemes are not usable imho - they are bad looking, from a human engineering and aesthetic point of you. the skin editor is a nice idea, but it's not tweakable enough. you only have groups of GUI elements, so if you want a green mute button you also have green loop braces or something like that.
Re: not a very important thing: a nicer looking GUI
Agree. Analog, Operator, Sampler, Tension. Id love scalable, all in one page view!nuperspective wrote:however, the gui for analog is a right mess. stops me from using it. that needs a clean. to small. to cluttered.
They should split up the elements; oscillators, filters, and lfos, etc, and evolve the macro rack system into a modular system! Would stop all bitching for a while.... in a dream world.
Tracktion was my DAW of choice before Live got midi. It has since v.1 had a brilliant device patching system. Think of it as Lives device view with vector cabling:

Re: not a very important thing: a nicer looking GUI
i think the gui is basically allwright..the colour chemes could be better or maybe polished with some shading fx ..what is probably the drection the poster is reffering to as nicer looking... ..
I actually see more benefit in things like auto collapsing of window parts.. like the I/O section or the browser window.. or midi editor that adjust with the zooming..
The midi editor itself is pretty dreadfull anyway... not much fun working with it in comparison to the midi editors in other DAW´s... needs many more moves... little orientation.. no fine position values and and and...this one really can be done again...
Or the grahical conventions for grouptracks are not consistent with midi and audio clips... there are better ways to mark grouptracks than removing the name bar... that really dont helps the overview... especially on collapsed grouptracks its just plain guess work what is going on..
a collapsed grouptrack in arrange should look like a normal track..but when you zoom it you see the graphics you have now under the name/colour bar...
So yes.. some improovements to the GUI can be done.. but it shouldnt change its appearance
