maybe they do? I think it said they don't use safety lines all the time because it is too tedious, but not that they didn't use some mechanism for breaking a fall.
but def a parachute-- even if I could get up there, if i saw a storm coming, i'd want off *now*.

This is the real shit ! If you don't know Alain Robert, this sick french guy has been free climbing the highest buildings of the world for more than 20 years now... and fell quite a few times.
