I gave MoDrum a shot 2 days ago for fun:
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php ... 9469820391
Had to play a DJ Set and thought I'd sync my iPhone to ableton just for the fun of it.
It worked quite well but after around 30 Mins the ad-hoc WiFi dropped for some reason and I wasnt able to resync (at least not without stopping and starting Ableton again which isnt really possible when bein live)

Hmm. Interesting.
I left MoDrum and BassLine playing for 3 1/2 hours last week and they were in perfect sync, lol. Helps that you can turn off the iPad screen to conserve the battery.
I've also never had an ad hoc network fail at any gig. That is weird.

Finally got around to trying the Omni TR app and it connects the way The Lord intended. Have an instance of Omnisphere open in a DAW (any DAW), strike up the Omni TR app, pick which computer to connect to, and done. No ad hoc bullshit and I didn't have any issues going through the wifi router. In fact I opened up Omnisphere on a second computer at the same time and I just chose the other computer when booting up the app and had no issues.
The only kind of silly thing is I couldn't find any way to connect to a second instance of Omisphere within the app. I had to close it, reopen it and then for the second instance chose the same computer but the name has a (2) after it, ie: Macbook Pro, Macbook Pro (2), Macbook Pro (3), etc. The number represents which instance to connect to. Maybe I'm missing something but I hope they come up with a better way than that.
Regardless: easy as shit connection and stable.

I was wondering about that, why some iOS apps require another app running on the host computer to make connections, and others like TR are just a simple button press away.

It's all just client/server. Omnisphere IS the 'other' app running on the host computer. It probably sets up some server in the background and monitors it's port, same as setting up an adhoc network but automagically.

I like automagically.

Probably right, but then why can't Live BE the 'other' app running on the host computer? Or is this a matter of Ableton having to make the app themselves or give access to more code than they would be comfortable with?

They'd have to come to some sort of agreement with all the iOS devs on protocol, make an API + documentation and add another layer of complexity onto live by adding in a server/networking component. It's much easier if someone else does it

Hmm. Omnisphere is probably talking to the iPad via OSC messages, and the connection appears automagic because of the the plugin establishing the connection in the client/server relationship mentioned. But it's not setting up any kind of network at all; merely riding along on whatever network wifi or ad hoc connection you've got set up. Konkrete Performer acts in the same way with OSCulator.
Live isn't going to be able to host anything on it's own because it doesn't support OSC (many other DAWs do, btw). If Live supported OSC, in theory any iOS app that used OSC wouldn't need any connection app running in the background in OSX because....it's there already.

Actually, I think just a MIDI script like what touchAble, Griid, and KapturePad uses would do the trick. If Live supported OSC messages, then you'd still use the scripts but there wouldn't be a need for all the server apps running in the background.
Wow, I think Omnisphere is so far the only pluggin that supports an iPad app.
Fuck, I wish that Alchemy had an app.

If you still want to set up your own adhoc network which would communicate OSC to Live, then probably yes, you'd just need midi scripts. However, Beats wants an all in one solution and Live doesn't support OSC.

Actually, now that I think about it the Omnisphere plug/app probably does NOT communicate OSC messages...because LIVE DOESN'T SUPPORT OSC.
So, what the fuck does it use??
When you install Omnisphere, it's just a standard plugin, correct? Are you sure it's not firing up a server app?

There's a reason the new app only works with the latest update of omnisphere. Either Omni IS the server, or it installs/launches a server in the background, there's really no other way it would work.

I keep telling people Omnisphere is magic, now we have proof.
