APC40 vs. iPad
Re: APC40 vs. iPad
appreciate the responses. but lettuce be reality, a controller with knobs and faders > touch screen. no question. even with having mastered this learning curve.
edit: on second thought, i'm just getting both.

Re: APC40 vs. iPad
Fucking LOL !!They hate apple products because the women that reject them would rather look at an iPad?
Re: APC40 vs. iPad
Beware of korg nanostuff... I've got them all and the usb connector is real cheap. Mines keep disconnecting by themselves. That was pretty dramatic at a gig I did long time ago. I dont use them anymore except the nanokey when my desk is full of crap and there's no place for my better controller.
Re: APC40 vs. iPad
Ipad vs hardware knobs ? Lets be serious
It's like touching the girl behind the glass, or touching her in classic, VA, hardware way
We all know what is better and those who say that you can't say what is better are just fanboys. feeling the knob is better because you don't have to look at knob to find it, tweak it, so you can do other things at the same time (ie. looking at crowd, looking for a beer or whatever
.

Lettuce once again be beef and cereal
What's good about most apps on the iPad. is that once your finger lands on a slider/knob, you can control it from anywhere on the screen as long as your finger remains on the screen the whole time.
So the whole, "you don't have to look at the knob" debate is meh. Anyways, if you guys don't feel like adapting towards a touch screen (ANY TOUCHSCREEN DEVICE <----Greeg), well, who gives a sh*t. But the debate stands like this
Mouse vs trackpad <--same argument
Texting on buttons vs texting on touch screen <--same argument
physical knobs/sliders vs touch screen knobs/sliders < -- same argument
There will always be a preference, and like Tone Deft mentioned earlier, ride your own big wheel.
Also lets not forget How many people perform live with Jazz Mutant's Lemur which is also a multitouch controller which i dream about having one day.

Re: APC40 vs. iPad
Personally, I feel touchscreens are horrible interfaces for music. Especially in a live environment. For sitting around on the couch surfing the web they are great though.
However if you don't mind using them, an ipad could be a fine replacement. Sounds painful as hell personally but thats up to you.

Thank you for your 'assumptions' my friend. It actually isn't painful at all.Donnie wrote:Personally, I feel touchscreens are horrible interfaces for music. Especially in a live environment. For sitting around on the couch surfing the web they are great though.

Re: APC40 vs. iPad
Assumptions? Ive had the ipad since it came out, and have implemented it a variety of ways. As a APC40 replacement, no thanks! Not even close!
...but like I said, thats just me

im sorry, when you said "sounds painful as hell" I took that as an assumption on your part. You've used the iPad as a controller than I'm assuming?Donnie wrote:Assumptions? Re: APC40 vs. iPad
Yep, ive used it all sorts of ways and have gone through the array of different softwares...but lately have settled on it as more of a novelty/crowd interaction device. A device to give people something visual to look at, easy to pick up and flip around. Konkreet Performer is probably my fav thing to use right now
I also like the Korg IMS-20 quite a bit, but even when im messing around with that I prefer to have a usb controller hooked up to handle the knobs and stuff. I find turning knobs and moving sliders on the ipad to be extremely painful, which is why I put it like that, because the screen doesn't always react how id like (especially when moving around, sometimes sweaty) and I hate how a slight accidental brush or press of the screen can have such drastic consequences.

Re: APC40 vs. iPad
I have an APC40 and an iPad with controller apps and I rarely use either.
I’m kind of old school with my music writing where the bulk of the work is done just writing the parts and very little is done in the way of altering the sound throughout the song.
For me the ideal setup would be an iPad and a hardware controller about the size of an iPad with knobs and faders that also works off wifi and is battery powered.
The big neat-o factor for me with the iPad controller apps is I could be across the room from my setup or even in another room for that matter and am able to control most of the parameters and common control functions without any confusion. Displayed clip names and parameter names is a huge plus.
I haven’t been out in forever to see a live show that might use such technology but I get the impression that there aren’t a lot (any?) performers that are taking advantage of the fact that you could be far away from a computer and still perform. They could be running all over the stage like a metal guitarist, but I don’t think most are brave enough to leave the safety zone of being behind some kind of rig.

Re: APC40 vs. iPad
You are playing middle of the road here. i was commenting on touchscreen vs. tactile, but because in this case the item is an iDevice it's assumed that it's Apple hate. it's like reverse racism... you're damned if you do... you're damned if you don't. any way you spin it... you can still locate a physical fader with your eyes closed, while a touchscreen fader... why would you try to locate something with your eyes closed? i fail to see the reasonH20nly wrote:You are playing middle of the road here. i was commenting on touchscreen vs. tactile, but because in this case the item is an iDevice it's assumed that it's Apple hate. it's like reverse racism... you're damned if you do... you're damned if you don't. any way you spin it... you can still locate a physical fader with your eyes closed, while a touchscreen fader...
