I wanted a 40 inch monitor, but the cost was a bit to high

Oh and I didn't want to have to need a TV licence, hence a monitor instead of a telly.

I recently upgraded to the 13" dual core 2.7 GHz i7 MBP with 4 GB ram. It is notably stronger than my Santa Rosa chip 2.2 Macbook. I went with the dual core, rather then the quadro, because of the smaller screen and the fact that I use it a lot for live playing (live input stream being processed in real-time) and the four cores can only add their additional virtual muscles when working with recorded material. Audio interface here is a RME Fireface400.

If I am careful what plugins I use the MBP is all the power I'll ever need. This is the first concert lappie I've had that brings this level of performance. HOwever, by first sight it didn't look so strong because the CPU meter was just a little bit lower than my old Macbook. But as I was adding more and more plugins the CPU meter did not rise as fast as on the Macbook. Seems it has a greater power at the higher loads? Maybe that's an effect of "the Overdrive" that I've seen mentioned here and there. Don't know exactly what The Overdrive means, but the name indicates some extra gear to kick in when it gets tough

what do you mean by smaller screen, are you saying it has a smaller screen somehow than the quadcore 17"... shouldn't they be the same?

quadcore is only on the 15" or 17". 13"s still only have dual core.

That's what the guy at the apple shop said to me about, plus its got hyperthreading which the i5 doesn't. The guy at the shop described it opening up extra lanes on the motorway when it gets busy

The core I5 13" macbook pro DOES have Hyperthreading (4 threads)..i got one, and you can see them in the activity monitor..

In the live 8 performance test , there's really a small difference in performance between the 13" core I7 and the the Core I5 one..
13" macbook pro 2,7 core I7 = 23%
13" macbook pro 2,3 core I5 = 27%

I think Groover was referencing his statement about the macbook air. i5 does not have hyperthreading. What it comes down to is (when looking at the specs)..the Airs have a slightly less capability to utilize ableton than a macbook pro from 2 years ago with an older processor and half the ram. This to me (especially with the likelihood of a new live being produced) should be enough to push anyone who wants longevity and capability into any of the macbook pro line.

JUST read this. i5 does now do hyperthreading. It doesn't refute my statement since the performance says even the i7 air was subpar to my older macbook pro.

Different people have different tolerances for this - some folks are perfectly happy with the MBP13, whereas I find the 17 is the smallest Im happy to work on day in day out. To me 13/15 models are just good for DJing- each to their own.

I'm doing ok with my 13" its a bit fiddly, but the screen size and resolution is fine, but like you say, different strokes for different folks.

I have to say its freaking awesome having this Mac I love it!!
