if you can find a Juno60 for that price..
(and I've seen them go for that price..)
6 voices of analog goodness... can be modded to handle midi..

+1 on the jp8080 (or jp8000 if you need a controller). Nice sounding and pretty flexible, and available for $500 or less in good condition.

The matrix-1000 is my all time favorite hardware synth, but it has no realtime controls which I think the OP wants.

Actually, come to think of it the two complement each other nicely... :)

Also, in defense of the CS1x/CS2x, while they're not as deep as the some of the better VA synths out there and the presets kind of suck, I've still found you can dial up some passable sounds. I kind of think their somewhat basic controls makes things easier when you're in a hurry. Plus running them through something like a tube comp (I use an old Radius/HHB Fatman) makes them sound waaaay better. I'm kind of fond of mine actually, and they're certainly cheap enough now!
