Joysticks are a big headache. I'm looking at 56ukp for one that I will have to modify heavily at the moment. I liked the ones Patrick has used on the amazing box on the first page of the midibox site, I emailed him but got no reply. I'm still looking.
I'm using the encoders that come with the Doepfer gear, don't know the manufacturer. They are tough, and I already have 32 which saves me 100ukp.
The main problem I am having is the spiralling cost of prototyping in the form of tooling up (soldering gear, verniers etc) and testing of switches (such a see/feel issue) at about 4ukp per go! I am going to have to go for PCB mounted ones to keep the cost down, and they are not as tough as panel mounts, but do take less space.
I think the overal cost of making the unit will be double the parts cost, with my time given free of course. It's a warning to those embarking on such a mission without access to machine shops and free testing of switches etc. I'm guessing 400ukp parts, maybe 700ukp overall right now, which is down on my earlier estimates for build cost, I know.
