sorry for bumping an old thread - if anyone minds
I'm interested in upgrading to a SSD. My comp is a 2011 MBP, 2.7 i7, 8gb ram, 500gb 5400 HD.
From what I can gather from what I've read here - its better to get a smaller capacity SSD - 128 for instance, and then use another External (or if one wants the optical conversion method) for samples and storage?
If so, how many apps do all have on your comp? Can you store, run apps on another HD?

i have a 160 gig SSD in the main HD tray for my OS and apps, and a 750 gig 7200 RPM HDD in the optical tray for samples and files. You'd have to have a hell of a lot of apps to even come close to filling up a 160 gig SSD past the recommended 20% free space. Your installer program will give you the option to install on whatever HD's show up and are formatted correctly (though I've never tried on another drive, other than my main OS one), so it should work.

it doesn't make much sense to have your applications on a superfast SSD and then have all your other stuff on a much much slower external hard drive. if you can afford a Thunderbolt external drive then go for it (but if you can afford one of those you can afford a bigger SSD to start with!).
inconvenience aside, an internal hard drive in the optical bay is the way to go.

yes as I'ev looked into it, it seems like the SSD and optical replacement is a good idea.
If I use my stock Apple 500gb 5400 drive in the optical bay will that be sufficient? with a 128gb SSD as the boot/app drive? currently have 76gb used on my HD with no intention of getting that many more apps, both live and logic are installed.
