the graphs people keep showing cover a very short period of time in geological terms.

True... and in cosmological terms it is the merest blip on a blip of a blip in a vast timescale, BUT
- does that really have any relevance when we are actually living and affecting things within that small timescale...
IF there is ANY possibility mankind is affecting these patterns with our blatant disregard for sensible sustainable energy usage...
wouldn't it be better to err on the side of caution?

we have much more dangerous short term threats, i doubt manmade global warming is going to get its chance to be our downfall

As usual it's one or the other, and not the option that it's both natural and we're contributing to it.

+1 (well +2 really)
Both very valid points! :D

I just saw this thread like it was a headline without the "is" and it sounded like there's this one guy who did something stupid and made global warming happen and now we're all fucked and it's all his fault.

Imagine that, if there was just one dude with a big house who left all his appliances on while he went away on holiday or something and now we can all blame him and all feel better about it.

Wait, wait, wait. You're saying we should reduce emissions on the off chance that climate change is caused by something as mundane as greenhouse gases? A well studied process we've been warned about for decades?

Even though someone may still come up with a theory for an as yet undiscovered mechanism for global warming?

Has anyone looked into Proxima Centauri' s gamma output yet? I bet it's that. Keep burning coal til I've spent a few years researching it. No point doing anything until we're absolutely sure.

Huh? Are you not paying attention? I am not saying what you are saying above. I was saying (& oh look, you've even quoted it, so I'm not exactly sure where your confusion has arisen from):
IF there is ANY possibility mankind is affecting these patterns with our blatant disregard for sensible sustainable energy usage...wouldn't it be better to err on the side of caution?

...Oh hang on, you're being tongue in cheek? Sorry, it's early, I haven't had my coffee yet (note, the kettle is been powered by our PVC array on our roof) 8O

i was heating up my apartment last night with the muffler on my pick up truck when i suddenly realized that the reason for all the climate change was that i left the bedroom window open. once i closed it, the climate leveled out.

i celebrated with some Chinese take out served in authentic polystyrene, as is tradition.
