Just because some product is a self-proclaimed "industry standard" doesn't mean that everyone interesting in making music should have to drop a pretty penny just to get it. Not all of us have Dave Clarke sized budgets; so I'd rather buy a tool that I know I works for the type of music I want to write, and for me, Max/MSP doesn't fit that. Same goes with Protools and cubase... I'd rather just have the best tool for the job.

FWIW, I don't think you need to buy MAX to use the Lemur.

All you need, I think, is any software that is OSC compatible -- this includes the free (and comparable) PD, and the retail Reaktor and MAX...

can you say

V_A__P___O____R_____W______A_______R________E_________?

Where the hell is that LEMUR anyway? IMHO, it's a way better idea. I'm getting sick of seeing:

"LEMUR will be available 1st quarter 2005."

I've got plenty of big ideas and web skillz, but you don't see me fronting. (Sorry, but I'm tired of folks tawking shit, and the only thing worse that a load of hype is a web site that talks about products that don't exist.)

TO ALL MARKETEERS: WAIT UNTIL YOU'VE GOT IT RIGHT, THEN YOU CAN PUSH IT ONLINE. WHY? BECAUSE ONLINE, YOUR POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS CAN TALK BACK!!!!

I should start a thread of bullshit products that the whole online community got psyched on until they heard it wasn't going to work out.

I trully hope they make this a reality before it goes the way of that damm Dodo bird.

Anyone remember the name of that controller that was supposed to come out with the 10 finger slots and the touch sensitive X-Y-Z surface?

Lemur

Hi Neuronat,

I've actually played with a Lemur when I was in Paris in October and September of last year.

I know the guys who are behind the company and they are a cool bunch of young guys from Bordeaux. The first units are being delivered in May followed by a second round in June.

The Lemur is an astounding piece of gear and is NOT vapourware. The philosophy behind it is to create a rock solid, pro piece of gear. For example, the LCD screen is not a normal touch screen but one of industrial quality that is bright enough to be used in full daylight outside!

These guys are really into quality control, kind of like Elektron. That's one reason for the hefty price tag, but it is the most versatile controller on the market because it can be anything you want it to be.

The CEO also developed a little app to allow the Lemur to work with apps such as Live that still don't support OSC (it's a midi/OSC convertor).

I'm itching to get my hands on one also, but unfortunately I to have to wait. When you get to see and play with a Lemur, you will buy it on the spot because it's such a fabulous bit of kit.

Patience my good man, patience....

I imagine the "Multi-touch" portion would behave something like

I love hearing people complain about having to buy Max, when its the industry standard.
I thought Bidule was the industry standard :-P

What's that, oh it's just the same thing but cheaper and easier to use....
Cool :-D

It would operate just like a second (or first) monitor as far as your graphics card is concerned. I imagine the "Multi-touch" portion would behave something like a "multiple mouse driver" (which do exist) and wouldn't have anything to do with MIDI at all.

For all my research, I haven't been able to come up with any info on the topic of "Multi-Touch touchscreens" save for some casino gaming machines and what looks like a student thesis paper:

Just going to have to file this in the "They Just Don't Make It Yet" catagory...

Isn't this what Tom Cruise used in Minority Report? I stated in another post that whatever it is they are using in that movie is THE answer for digital artists.

Yes, I think this is the goal, ultimately.

...and what "industry" is that exactly?

Lemur looks interesting, but are all touch screens capable of tracking multiple fingers (touches) at the same time? If so, is there anything stopping someone from just getting a cheap touch screen for 1/5 of the cost and writing some software to take advantage of it in this way?

It seems strange that it hasn't been done...

Thats a sweet looking concept controller. I hope they get it going soon!

Something similar was posted on the ucapps picture gallery, I wonder if its the same guys developing this thing.

If there ever would be a "industry standard" midi control unit, it would have to be modular...

Komplex -> Yeah, it looks a lot like the concept drawing on there, I thought the very same thing..

Yes, lemur is multitouch capable, touchscreens are not--they work like a mouse.

Lemur uses a different technology (physically) than any commercially available touchscreen monitor (to my knowledge--someone show me I'm wrong). So no, it cannot be done as you have described, unfortunately. :(

Lemur Tracks Multiple Inputs...

The Lemur tracks multiple nputs simultaneously so you can move for example, 5 faders with one hand, while your using a finger from your other hand on a x-y parameter zone.

I was referring to Max, not the Lemur, as the industry standard...and the industry is the electronic and computer music industry.
