nathannn: arm automation is just an option if automation should be recorded or not. to record it you have to hit session record button (the O button...).
It's not grouped very well. midi arrange overdub and arm automation are just option for session recording and not actuall functions. I think that's the main problem.

So when you want to record JUST session automation you also record a clip, right?
No, the clips i am recording are violin/guitar/Keyboard loops, so i don't have a third hand to record automation !
I'd like to have two separate processes.

i just did that with fm8 and recorded myself modulating an operator but still no automation shows up in the clip.

Typical example :
I got all my instrument looping tracks armed + a few pre-made clips.
- i am playing clips
- recording some violin loops
- i wanna automate a filter on a pre-made clip before recording another violin loop
- Tada ! while i automate my filter, it records empty clips in all my violin slots
- end of the game

Edit: I figured it out

Ah I thanks I think I got it.
I guess it's not a solution, but have you tried this:
- when you hit session recording first (so it's all time on) and then arm the tracks you could record clips (press the record symbol from the clip self)
- and have session automation recording (which can be toggeld on/off with "automation arm" button).
With this I can toogle session automation on/off and record clips. both actions don't interfere.

Yeah i noticed that when i did hit session recording once, i can simply toggle the session automation arming.
So it could be a workaround except that i cannot afford to do this on stage each time i start a new song !
also :
- when the tracks are armed and transport stopped, hitting session recording runs the transport
- hitting stop disables session recording
- i tried to save a set with session recording on. When i load it back, it's off.

yep, I see.
Have you contacted ableton about it?
Do you have a imaginative solution for this?

I did contact them. Unsurprisingly no answer yet.
A solution ? Toggle automation arming simply allows you to record automation, regardless of armed or unarmed tracks. ?
Or something in the prefs, i don't know...

i know, but you still have to hit session recording ! That doesn't change anything to the problem. I don't know what's the point of having an automation toggle if you still have to toggle another button. Doesn't really make sense to me.

the problem is that u record empty clips? why is that a problem? cant u just see them as dummy clips and use "monitor in" instead of arming these tracks?
