Dr. Dre school of music and technology
Re: Dr. Dre school of music and technology
Well there’s something to be gained just by being surrounded by people with the same interests and motivations as you. Of course there are no guarantees and I also realize that today people feel staring at a computer screen qualifies as being surrounded by people with similar interests and motivations.

That's generally not a bad motivation, but why choose a bussiness just to let you work with others. Are there no other ways for colaborations?!beats me wrote:Well there’s something to be gained just by being surrounded by people with the same interests and motivations as you. As an example if Ableton were to have a weekend seminar in your city that you had to pay for don’t you think the attendees would be a little more motivated and focused overall than people’s whose only proactive effort involved creating a website login? I’m not saying those people don’t exist on the internet. I’m talking about percentage. Most successful producers don’t bother participating in web forums or social networks beyond promotion.

Colaborations should always be several musicians in the same room for hours on end.
Btw, I have been to one Ableton class that was part of the Atonal festival. But this appeared to be more a showcase for beginners, I at least didn't learn anything new, and the rest of the audience was very engrossed in how sampling works
But how about Ableton User Groups, should be a good place to meet other Abletonians and possibly find musically like minded individuals.
Re: Dr. Dre school of music and technology
I realize I keep letting this go in the direction of collaboration, but the program is setup to get you a job in the music and technology industry. Being around other composers and musicians to possibly collaborate with is just a bonus.
I don’t know what you do for a living but at my work music is just something for background noise or something to enjoy while you’re drunk. That's the extent of the interest outside myself.

That's what I imagine is the extend of how much most in the biz care about music too.beats me wrote: but at my work music is just something for background noise or something to enjoy while you’re drunk.

Well that's cool you can be drunk at workbeats me wrote: but at my work music is just something for background noise or something to enjoy while you’re drunk.
But I think it would make things easier to accept that the 'music industry' is really a fashion industry. Seeing as how many here are already disillusioned and bitter, it shouldn't be much of a stretch, but don't be so bitter to think that noone involved in the 'music industry' is like some wallstreet douchebag that doesn't care about music. Sure, it's still a business but if you were really into it for the money then you wouldn't be in that industry in the first place.
Re: Dr. Dre school of music and technology
I imagine working at Apple, Beats, or in the music industry is a never ending gauntlet of egos and frenemies.
Being ignored by the major music industry is the old school producer bitter and it’s easier to just pretend that its collapsing in on itself out of some kind of karmic justice. The new producer bitter is not having major offers come rolling in because of a video they tossed up on youtube while that has worked for others.
I’m actually shocked at how low the viewer counts are for some artist videos I thought are (should be) a lot bigger than they are….if the view count is the measurement. I remember at one point mp3.com got rid of visitor and play counts. It somewhat leveled the playing field. Like it or not, seeing how many or few people viewed a video does have an impact on people’s perceptions of what they are viewing or listening to.

Re: Dr. Dre school of music and technology
I like the idea of not showing a view count. Also, if you try it on YT, you can play a video for only a second and it counts as a view. Easily corruptible.
People instinctively think a higher view count = popular = good and if it does nothing for them or they dont get it then they think there's something wrong with them and/or they have to pretend they get it/like it. I'm mostly talking about teens, of course, but it's not like a lot of people mature past that anyway...
There could be a dope song posted by 'nobody' and some people might think it's tight but if the artists name was 'Flying Lotus' then people would be 'OMGZORRZ FUCKING GENIUS' and 1mil+ likes and it's a hit.
Personally I just think don't sweat it. Do what you do and let the chips fall where they may. If you're just doing it for the love then you don't have to worry about anything else.
