I will make one more comment on security and then respectfully drop it for reasons stated...

Once your privacy is breached, it's breached. There is no better. It is, or it ain't.
Stromkraft wrote:I wonder what the huge undertaking a cross-platform developer like Ableton, to support as many OS versions that they still do (despite the drops last spring), does entail. More than that I wonder how Windows users can successfully set up their machines to keep them stable as music production machines. Surely it can be done despite all the variables?
I can't even imagine what a headache it must be with applications. Just as I can't imagine what a headache it must be for Microsoft to be cross hardware in the way they are. Micrsoft is huge, but developers like Ableton are considerably smaller. The worst part about the whole fiasco to me seems to be the disagreements on standards... Such as the CD+R vs. CD-R debacle. It's as though the OS makers do this just to spite us and smaller software companies that want to support all the users get caught in the crossfire.

I would be about 50% happier if I could control 'automatic' updates on Win 10.

Currently, it will begin crunching away at a download while I either need the bandwidth, or need to have my computer and hard drive 'ready to play'. It is also a distraction if I am focusing on something (I do math homework on my other win10 laptop).

Not only that, it might randomly decide to restart after I've stepped away from the computer, which is complete bullshit. This has also happened in 'sleep' mode (resulting in the computer no longer being in sleep).

Finally, since I have no clue what updates are being downloaded and when, I can never be absolutely sure that the computer will function the way I expect it to when it starts back up.

Hell, it's also a nuisance if you just need a quick restart, and the computer decides to take its sweet time installing updates which you did not anticipate installing at that specific time.

I get why this might be important for casual users, but this is a very very very bad experience. And Cortana is always running, even when she's 'deactivated'.

Start > Settings > Update & Security > Advanced Options

There's a drop down list... choose 'Never check for updates'

you can also take it slightly further and select the link for 'Choose how updates are delivered'

and the privacy settings are in the same location and can be turned off... or left on and grumbled about on internet forums, your choice.

I do not have pro. I have limited options and limited capabilities. For the way I have it set up, it will still unexpectedly restart or download things without my approval.

Also, I never actually said the word 'privacy'. I am aware of the privacy settings and have set those available to taste. However, even when Cortana is 'off', she is still always 'on'. For some reason Microsoft thought it would be clever to force her to run while a person runs Windows 10. No, she doesn't show up on my start menu, or interfere, but Cortana is still running as a process no matter what.

Taking your advice, I've chosen to explore my upgrade options. I figured it would be available as a purchase upgrade somewhere within the system, the store, or the Microsoft site.

It's becoming more and more of a waste of time, and nothing is very clear or obvious. Retailers sell full hard copy versions of 10 Pro. When searching the Microsoft site, it is more concerned with directing people on how to upgrade from 7-8.1 to 10. Anything that mentioned Pro was a bit vague.

So then I look in the store. There is an upgrade app or whatever. At that page, there is no button to purchase anything and it says 'you're running Windows 10 Pro and you're all set' along with a list of Pro features vs Home features. I went back to my settings and it still had the limited options. I also went back to td Microsoft site which claims in running 10 Home.

Everything is vague and essentially pissing me off. You would think they would have a very clear and obvious means for giving them money for an upgrade on their page. Although, I was more looking for the price of the upgrade... to make the decision. If I can't find the upgrade, I can't find the price :/. Maybe my laptop is so old that it has a confusing labrynth of configuration within it (this particular one went from Vista to 8 (and then 8.1) to 10).

Edit: okay..... I'm using two different computers. And one is Pro. Agh. I should keep track of things better.

still... i wouldn't think the privacy "features" are limited by version.

My understanding is that they are indeed limited by version.

well, that is pretty lemon-ish.

personally, i don't use cash or disk space on software with "home" or "student" anywhere in the naming convention.

After a night of frustration, I am turning into a very disappointed Live 9.5 user on Windows 10! it ... just freaking does NOT work! I keep having to hold the Alt key when I launch it... and then it takes about 20 MINUTES!!!! to load! Then once its loaded Windows Loses Audio! So I have to reboot Windows, and then I'm back where I started! Ableton Live won't launch no matter what I do. So I remove the Configuration file.. Lose any settings I may have, then Launch it again, wait 20 minutes... When It finally does come up. Push 2 won't light up.

After wasting an hour getting that to finally work, NOW Live 9.5 lost all the libraries All connections to the Help index and god knows what else!!! , when I renamed the "files.dba" folder. forcing it to re-scan, it restored only a fraction of the Core librarys and lost track of all the packs I painstakingly installed!

The only option I have left it seems is to completely uninstall and re-install!!!!

Is it really this BAD???? I installed it on my Mac Mini, and I don't have any of these problems!
I am just now reading this. I have upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 and it works fine. You have described a files.db corruption.

a. Go to Ableton Preferences / Files
b. Assign proper folders NON - OS drives for optimal response,
c. Find Ableton\... Live ... \Databse\files.db file and DELETE it

See image for where files.db is:
http://oi39.tinypic.com/x1ipee.jpg

For the Audio DISABLE audio devices in Audio Preference, click on SOUND > PLAYBACK DEVICES and make sure your Audio Interface is NOT selected as default audio device, as this would introduce a driver conflict between Ableton and Default windows sound device - though it's possible to use both with certain DirectX and/or ASIO tweaks at the same time, it's not recommended.

I have a solution...

1.copy the text below into a notepad document
2.name and save the document (eg Windows10.txt) to your desktop
3.rename the document using .bat as the file extension (eg Windows10.txt = Windows10.bat)* to create a batch file
4.right click on the batch file, select 'Run As Administrator'
5.hit any key as instructed when the script gets to the end...

*if you cannot see the file extension browse to and change the following
Start > File Explorer > File > Change Folder & Search Options > View (tab) > (uncheck) Hide Extensions for Known File Types

REM *** Remove Cortana ***
REM Currently MS doesn't allow to uninstall Cortana using the above step claiming it's a required OS component (hah!)
REM We will have to rename the Cortana App folder (add ".bak" to its name), but this can be done only if Cortana is not running.
