Be careful updating using the "Replace" option if you have custom Themes and Scripts. The installer deletes everything.

How can you update a non-beta version without replacing the application file? I must be missing something.

Only applies if you have custom scripts and things which you should make a backup of anyway then if needed, manually copy them back. No biggie.

It sure is, as there are a few dozen of updates per year and it's actually rather annoying to copy the custom themes/remote scripts back to app-resources each time.

It’s really not that bit of a deal. I have custom scripts, I keep them in a folder where the data is for live and copy them in. Takes about 16 seconds. Way more inconvenient things in life than going copy > paste.

10.0.2 has only been made available to a select group of beta testers via auto updates at this point, it has not been publicly announced which is why some people are not seeing it in their accounts on Ableton.com yet. A few of these beta testers mistakenly jumped the gun in announcing it was publicly released, thus creating the confusion.
The offending beta testers and their llamas have since been sacked, so we expect this to be less confusing in the future.

Considering the release notes I posted that's confusing information. Otherwise you sound very convincing. I especially liked the Llama part.
I think the betas have been wonderful. I've actually had a few odd crashes lately with the 10.0.1 release, so hoping for that to abate with this new and shiny, practically summer, release.

What would be considered a "custom script"? Does auto updating cock up all MIDI remote scripts that aren't included when you first install Live?

Yeah in the MIDI Remote Script folder it doesn't carry them over. Will carry over user scripts (in the User folder of Live).
I have my Komplete Kontrol script and a custom one for the old original launchpad for colour blindness. Also one for Touchable. I keep them in a folder outside the Live path (1 level up) and just copy them back in again when I update.

Lot of good auto updating does, then... Well, thankfully, sensible developers like NativeKontrol and Isotonik at least put the settings files outside of the MIDI remote scripts folder.
