Just download iTunes and you can encode and transcode Apple Lossless files right away.
I think you missed the point - I don't want to download iTunes neither do most of my friends..

Imagine yourself voluntarily installing windows media player and you might get where I'm coming from.

I have issues with Apples business methodologies/ strategies/ behaviour, I wont support their products.

No man, you're not alone.

I had to download Quicktime the other day and was shocked to see that I had no choice but to get bloody itunes along with it. I had a good look round it but didn't find anything that impressed me at all.

Luckily it let me uninstall it without removing quicktime.

There is a way of getting quicktime alone, but it's bloody hidden on the site. Hate that too.

I use this
QuickTimeAlternative

there's one for RealPlayer and one for Mediaplayer too.

they are all smaller, quicker and generally less intrusive and annoying than the 'propper' versions.

I tried itunes once, but it didn't do anything that made me want to abandon my current apps. I have a non-standard mp3/4/divx player (gmini400)

Thats cool guys, no one is forcing you to use itunes or any other apple software. You dont want to use itunes the same way we dont want to use flac or ogg because it is not compatible with itunes and we do use itunes to organize our music and itunes already has a lossles encoder built into it for quite some time now and what we are asking is if ableton could include that format as well as flac so those of us who do use itunes to organize our music can continue to do so using apples built in formats.

indeed, I wasn't suggesting they dont include it. They probably will at some point (IE : 5.01)

I was merely commenting about iTunes in response to

which seemed a bit odd to me. And went on to wonder if I could open the format without iTunes.
